3d Scanning And 3d Printing

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by DRR117, Sep 1, 2022.

  1. So after recent surgery and not being able to leave the sofa for a few weeks I impulsively bought a Revopoint3D scanner and a 3D printer (well 5 printers now, I may have got carried away)

So if anyone has any need for a scan of a Ducati part to develop or reverse engineer something feel free to get in touch. Still learning but really enjoying it. And if there are any more scanners / printers or modellers on here would be great to know what tech and software you’re using.

sticking my scans on SketchFab (https://sketchfab.com/T8components) free to download if anyone needs a scan of a Panigale V4 dash :joy:

Thinking I might try scan a complete 1199 engine before a fellow forum member collects it in the next few days

  2. That’s fantastic. I do have something I want scanning. I’ll pm you.

You’ve got me really interested now. Presumably you’d recommend the Rovopiont kit? I know absolutely nothing about scanners and printers but they strike me as really interesting and useful bits of kit.

  3. If you’re making stuff……..

  4. Very interesting thread. I bought a nitron shock for my 996 track bike a few years back which needed a new mount bracket making. A quick call to them with dimensions abd they say “no worries, we will 3D print you one today”.
    Endless possibilities.

  5. What's the dims you can 3d print?

  6. I was in the same boat, I work computers anyway and wanted to learn 3D printing, then I wanted a scanner. It’s a sharp learning curve because even whet you get the scan the software to mesh and clean the scans is also entertaining ‘ annoying :joy:

I’m still learning how to get the best results from the scanner been merging 9 scans of the 1199 engine and it’s gonna need a load more yet before it’s anywhere near. Plus the scanner won’t scan some surfaces so you need a scan in spray (or dry shampoo ;))

the revopoint is the only scanner I’ve used so don’t really have any frame of reference but more than happy to scan anything for forum members as it helps me learn how to get the best results.

  7. I have 3x ender 3’s, a creality CR6 at the minute and a tronxy X5SA. I model the scans in .ply or .obj files. Printing I predominantly .stl files at the minute. I’m doing a load of development in VR at work at the minute which i suppose is what started this fascination with 3D printing and 3D scanning.

to design files for printing I’m using Tinkercad as its free while I learn Shapr3D

designed this as the V4 I bought has a rizoma cap and I’d no idea how you get the cap off… saw the ‘key’ online and decided to design and print one out :)

Had to design and print a part for the mower after the missus trash it… works a treat :upyeah:

All good experience and practice. And really enjoyable

  8. I don’t have the new revopoint mini which uses blue light. That was a kickstarter when I bought mine.

yes the circles help the scan orientate as it can easily lose its tracking position and start putting cloud points in the wrong place. Again it’s a learning curve.

can save to .stl in mesh mixer of mesh lab is the scan is needed to be printed yeah. I’ve only stuck with .obj as I can use them in the VR environments I’m building to understand how to rig integration and movement with .obj files in unity.

  9. Maximum at the minute is 330mm x 330mm x 400mm, but that’ll increase as I’m always looking at bigger printers :D

  10. That’s great cheers. I found when meshing the engine scans to day some were far noisier than others. Gonna have another go tho see if I can get a more refined model.

  11. Can you print CF? I got a project going soon(you'll love it) I want to replicate the GP22 on a v4

  12. You can, but I think the continuous fibre stuff is pretty specialist and expensive. It is more common to have a 2 or 3 part mould printed from a thermoplastic and to make the part under pressure “forged” in CF.

  13. My 1199r dual winglets were designed and printed in 3d in CF, no issue there but i've learned from that, next time i'll use clay to make one side, scan mirror and print the other side

  14. I've got a race cone widened one, I plan to use it as a base and replicate the winglets including mid center duct,

Next part will be on side fairings, trim / modify belly pan (add a vent) make the other set of winglets currently on the GP22

Tank extension and key cover - change the design using clay - make it in fiberglass - then use that to make a mould
Use the standard subframe and modify the tail unit

By the time I sell my 1199r and get a v4 hopefully throughout winter I can get it done before next season :upyeah:

  16. Do you think you could scan and print me a load of £20 notes?

  17. Sounds like a mega project!

I do have CF infused PLA filament but I haven’t printed with it yet and don’t think it’s CF despite the companies claims

definitely happy to help out wherever I can with the project tho :upyeah:

  18. Yeah sure, they might be a bit rigid tho, and in one colour. I’d say around 50% of shops would still accept them :joy:

  19. Put me down for a pallet to start with and I’ll see how I get on.
