This is in response to the forum member Kwack's post in another section somewhere before the website was reorganised in the same way that supermarkets reorganise things so you can't find anything. Anyway, it seems I've unwittingly dropped a bollock when it comes to the 3rd year extended warranty. I bought my 1199 when it was 10 months old from a Ducati dealer who transferred the remaining warranty into my name and said I would be able to take out the 3rd year extended warranty when the time came if I wished. What they failed to tell me was I had to take it out before the bike was 18 months old. I didn't realise this. My bike is now 20 months old so I'm too late. So if you want to take out this extra warranty and you don't know about this rule then this directed at you. I'm a bit pissed off as I intended to do this and I'm pissed off that Ducati didn't send me a reminder. They seem to be capable of constantly sending me reminders of all the latest over priced T-shirts and other shite they've got on offer, surely they should remind me of the important stuff!!. All is not lost though as I have had a quote from a third party warranty company for £220/year which I can renew every year for as long as I own the bike. I had a warranty with 'Warranty Direct' when I had my 1098. I never claimed on it so can't comment how they perform if the worst happens but it gave me peace of mind. The on line reviews for them are a bit sketchy but this is the same in all reviews for anything as all the axe grinders come out in force to seek revenge. One thing they are sticklers for is the bikes service history being up to date which shouldn't be a problem. I think I might give it a go.
Cheers Big M this is useful knowing. Agree they send enough crap to remind you to buy t-shirts and the like but now for something in my mind as critical as this. I am on my 2nd engine in 12m and 4000 miles so would like to have a warranty to cover for something like that again Can you let me know which warranty company you went with on PM is fine. I would have renewed with Ducati or at least ask for some goodwill on it as my new engine doesnt come with a fresh warranty
Thanks for the info Big M, I just assumed as probably most others would that you would be notified before the waranty ran out regarding renewing.
I think it's unfair Ducati won't warranty a new engine!. A few years ago I spent 20k on putting a new engine in a 7 year old machine at work and Mercedes Benz gave a 2 year warranty with it!!. I went with a company called 'Warranty Direct' I'm not promoting them in any way as I never had to claim off them when I had my 1098, but they've been around for a few years now and you just keep renewing the policy every year like you do an insurance policy. I can't just remember the details of the policy off hand but it'll tell you on their website http://www.warrantydirect.co.uk/bike-warranty.html . I was quoted £220 a year for my 1199. In a few months time when the manufacturers warranty runs out on mine I will go with this as it wont take long to rack up a bill of more than £220 if something goes wrong. You don't have to get Ducati to fix it either any VAT registered garage is acceptable. If you've missed out on the extended Ducati warranty like me it may be worth considering.
Agreed - sent a complaint to Ducati. Lets see what they come back with. Push comes to shove will have to go Warranty Direct route. Few months yet so will wait until I hear back
If you recomend a friend to Warranty Direct they send you £20 (providing they get the warranty). Just sorted my sponds out
They have just changed it to 23 months but you still have to be the original owner though so it doesn't help in your case
Ducati came back and gave me extra years warranty on the engine only.. so I covered for another year, which is good news, saves me a few pennies,, only rightly so I feel
The engine started leaking oil and running on one cylinder. Motorapido stripped it down and found that the liners had flaked sending the bits all round the bottom of the engine and melting to the crankshaft, bottom of pistons etc Ducati decided to supply a new engine as they hadnt seen this occur before
Just thought I would add some further light to this. whilst Ducati have given me a 3rd year warranty it is ONLY on the engine.....guess what 1 month before the current warranty runs out my forks are screwed and are being replaced as we speak So upshot is I still reckon a 3rd party warranty from warrantywise or such like is needed....irrespective of having the Ducati engine only warranty.. so really no better off TBH
Still love the bike but would be interesting to know what is going wrong with them and will the 899 be a more reliable option.
