Hi there , I’ve finally got round to working on my 998 now I don’t have to contend with summer in east Asia. the 45/50 link pipe I bought which was from a 748r I just can’t seem to fit. I now understand there seem to be 2 types. The length is clearly different from the original 45. I assume I have one that one fit my bike or do I just need to spend more time wiggling everything about ? thanks for the help.
Thought the 998 having a different engine to the 748/996 the exhaust systems were the same visually but different in dimensions? Certainly my 996 has a mismatch of exhaust parts but nothing from a 998..
Every link pipe should fit, if it’s not modified. The diff between a 748 916 996 and a 998 has to do with the heatshield mounting. Looking at the pic the 45-50 seems original and should fit.
Ok. 748/S/R - std 45mm 916 - std 45mm 996 - std 45. S/SPS 50mm. Testastretta different head and exhaust headers. 998 - std 45. 996R S/R 50mm. The std 45 can be equipped with a link pipe to create 45-50. You also have a link pipe from 50-54 for the S/R models. And yes the 996R 998S 998R have a deepsump engine.
You need 45/50 ones with the same short length or else they’ll never fit. I’m not convinced the link pipe you bought is off a 748R but I may be wrong. Calling @Expat Jack , does that look like a 748R link pipe to you? Is the shorter section longer than usual on the 748R?
I’d say the OPs is as sold from a 748R but it looks like the down pipes on the 998 are longer than those on the non testastretta engines hence the shorter length of link pipe where they join. By the way @hp82 there’s a fella on here looking for a 45/50 link pipe for his 916, if your one is unwanted he may be interested. I’ll BRB with his name. edit: it’s @Kie
Thank you. Makes sense. Think I will take it back to standard and look to sell the link pipe and 50mm carbon termis. Too many bikes getting pulled over here now for having race cans and it’s incredibly tedious. Cheers for the help everyone.
