1199 4th Gear Misfire

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by CorseOfCorse, Jul 18, 2022.

  1. Hi All, I want to pick the Forums brains regarding an issue I'm currently experiencing on my 1199. This doesn't happen during normal road use, but only on wide open throttle going up through the gears from with the QS. When I put it into 4th gear the quickshifter works fine, but then a millisecond later, it seems to replay the ignition cutout and cuts out for a second. As I've not had her long I originally thought it must be me leaving a bit of pressure on the gear lever, but after 170 odd mile rideout on Saturday, I'm sure she's misbehaving.

Any thoughts? All advice (with a pinch of salt) gratefully recieved.

  2. Time for an update.

I originally thought that this was a QS issue, and replaced the stock unit with a Translogic one and took it out for a long ride. Was fine to start with then after a while went back to it's old tricks. Very frustrating, next step was to book it into PCR to get it on the Dyno to see if they could recreate the problem. After an hour or so, the double cut out re-appeared, I asked them to do me a Power run print out. My bike had a massive flat spot between 4 & 7k and produced a very disappointing 163 BHP with 88ft/lbs. Although the Torque figure was ball park, the BHP should have been about 20 bhp more...

Bike sounded fine, no rattling or anything and the fact it was ok Torque wise but running a bit rich got me thinking about checking the Fuel Air system. Although she wasn't displaying any Fi error warnings, first step was to check the Air Filter.

Which had totally collapsed in on itself and was absolutely full of shit. I don't think it's ever been changed since new (Bike is very low milage, so I wasnt expecting it to be this bad)
52425064438_524e3bd005_o.jpg I don't usually do this when replacing Air Filters but I decided to empty it out, just to see how bad it was... It was even worse than I originally thought...

Fitted a Pipercross Filter and it's transformed the bike, from what I originally thought was an unusable road bike at anything under 50 mph (It was not happy at Low Revs in 4th, 5th and 6th), its now absolutely peachy, and no sign of the double cut out. My theory is that at high revs under full load the momentary ignition cut out must have dropped the 02 mass to fall enough to cause a misfire.

Moral of this story is, always service your bikes when you buy them privately.:thinkingface::joy:
