As i was riding along today the dash went all dark, no indicators etc and the 5.1 error came up. Then sorted itself, then did it again etc. Checked the voltage while in neutral and it was 14.3, then went to Hi (as it says on the dash). Then came down to 14v and stayed there, all is well. Prior to this i was getting volts of 13 ish, and as low as 12.3. Could fit be the reg/rec? This was changed upon purchase of the bike as the same thing happened then, or do i just have a dodgy battery - i think it is the original from 2010?
Sounds more like a reg/rec problem to me, I have read that some have put a mosfet type on as they are more reliable.
Yeah that sounds like the Reg/Rec as the voltage is high, battery can't do that (well not as far as I'm aware) Shindengen Mosfet apparently is the way to go, fitted to Yams, Triumphs and others. Think it was @Chris that helped sort out another forum member with a similar problem http://ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/1098r-conked-out.38046/ That may help John
Hi John, I try my best but am not half the wizzard that @chrisw is when it comes to modern electric fault-finding. Have fitted the mosfet kit before and as you said, it's the best way to go. Secondhand units are turning up at a reasonable price now (still no outlet for the Shindengen units in the UK) and all you need is the loom and adaptor connectors then.
The mosfet upgrade is well worth doing. I would avoid the cheap Chinese versions as they are proving unreliable. Buy a second hand one from a ZX10, Triumph, R1 or Ducati. If you want the best then consider a Series R/R. I have one on my 1198. If you call Electrex on 01491 682369 and tell them you are doing the mod they will supply the Series R/R. The connectors need replacing so there is a bit of crimping involved. Not cheap though.
If you mean series r/r then is a 35 amp unit enough? Polaris use the SH775 on a few models and they are about £70 brand new. I bought one for the triumph but then learned that they can freak out at something over 10k rpm so its still in its box somewhere... Looks like it will be good for the Multistrada. There is now a SH847 which is fine for higher RPM, it's been tested to the limiter on a Daytona 600 so that's an indicated 14K (Probably near 13 really). Charging System Diagnostics - Rectifier/Regulator Upgrade - Page 2 - Triumph Forum: Triumph Rat Motorcycle Forums A good read on the subject.
