Hello, I have a 996R with the 54mm full exhaust and matching ECU (part #96506801B). With this ECU the tachometer does not function at all. It seems my problem is likely due to a faulty output from the ECU that drives the tachometer. I ruled out other issues like CPS or the tachometer itself because when I swap out this ECU with the original stock one, everything works fine. So my plan was to buy a used 59M ECU perhaps from a 998 and just reflash it. However, I am hearing that perhaps there is some sort of issue with the 998 ECUs that prevents it from working with a different bike once reflashed? Seems there is some sort of compatibility issue that I do not fully understand So my question for the ECU gurus, is it possible for me to buy a used 59M ECU and reflash it with my 996R 54mm map and have it work on my bike? Is there a specific model bike I need to find an ECU from? BTW, the reason why I wont flash over the stock ECU for the 996R is that I want to keep one working unit and not risk bricking it.
You have no immo to worry about so can use a second hand 59M ECU. If you have the cables for JPDiag then you can use Guzzidiag Reader and Writer to clone your original ECU.
Thank you. I am definitely not an ECU expert and only have experience flashing 5AM ECUs. Anyway, a pretty well respected member on another forum didnt have success flashing 998 ECUs. See his comments below. I guess I can just buy an ECU and give it shot.
If you need a second opinion, I would try and communicate with these folks: https://nrbike.fr/ They are among the « ECU gurus » in France. They also happen to have a decent stock of ECUs, including NOS 996R ECUs. They provided me with one of these with a map for my 998 w/ 50 Arrow Titanium racing cans. Top notch.
