999 59m To 5am Ecu Swap

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by TheJackal, Mar 11, 2021.

  1. Must be the mandatory COVID-19 confinement or something but when I first stared on Valentina (https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/just-picked-up-a-999s-calling-her-valentina.81207/) I dug up loads of info on the IAW 59M to IAW 5AM swap but now....zilch.

I can source a not too expensive 5AM ECU that I'm thinking of swapping for 999s' existing 59M.

    Questions:

    1. I want to keep the immobiliser function working so does this mean it needs to be flashed with a 999 IMMO ON bin file?
    2. Being as that a Gen2 "standard" (non S) 999 is deep sump, can I assume that both bin file for immobiliser function and corresponding map file on the 5AM can be for a standard 2005+ 999 ?
    3. Can flashing for 1) and 2) be done with IAWWriter ?
    4. Where can I find the immo and map files? :)

  2. Source an IAW5AMHW610 from an 848/1098/1198/HM/SF as these are all virgin ECUs. Invest in TuneECU. Flash ECU to a 999S map (do not do anything re immo). Program keys using red key.

  3. Thanks @chrisw !

So basically I then code my existing black keys using my red key which is recognized by my 999 dash.

Re the immo, I remember reading that the 59M and 5AM ECUs handle it in a different way. Can you shed some light on this?

  4. Program it as in the Workshop Manual. The immo does not differ.

  5. Seller says he doesn't know if its been immo'd off as its pulled from a race bike.

If it has been turned off, can it be turned back on ?

  6. The only guarantee would be to re-virginise the ECU. You would need specialist kit to do that like JPDiag Writer (modded) or Advanced Scooter Workshop.
JPDiag connected to the ECU would identify if it was virgin or coded. What bike is it from? As a rule of thumb on pre 848 etc bikes, stock ECU = coded and DP = virgin.

  7. Hi!

could you explain the benefits of doing this?

    Thx
    Grant

  8. They appear to be 999 ECUs and one has been flashed with a superstock spec map for a 1098.

I would assume then that these are either coded or immo off, correct?

  9. Longevity. The IAW59M can suffer coil driver failure. The IAW5AM appears to be more robust. The IAW59M has been around on Ducatis since 2001 when it was fitted to the 996R and ST4S. 20 year old electronics.

  10. cheers for the info.
    :upyeah:

  11. Could be coded, immo off or virgin.

  12. I have two 5AM options, one pulled from a 999R and another from a 1098.

    999R 5AM:

1098 5AM (looks like it was used for Superstock so not sure what its like):

@chrisw Assuming the 1098 is virgin, would the 999R ECU be coded?

  13. The 999R ECU ref number is for a stock map in the family 28640831* (where * is a letter H through L). As a stock map it is likely to be coded.

  14. So guess I'll have to take my chances with the 1098 5AM :)

  15. 5AM from the 1098 fitted and running!

    Path to success:

    1) Use patience and harsh words to disassemble battery box
    2) Fit 5AM ECU
    3) Use JPDiag to check virgin status of the 5AM ECU and as expected, virgin!
    4) Use IA5xReader to backup the exiting flash (confirmed 1098)
    5) Use IA5xWriter to flash 999S-2006-28640841M-IAW5AMHW610
    6) Check bike starts and immo works, all good!
    7) Check TPS value and realize that you've run out of what you used in 1) so tomorrow will be a fun day disassembling half the bike in order to reset the TPS :)

  16. So a few hours to get the damned airbox out and take the lid off but, TPS reset and holding at 2.3-2.4 degress....idles like a charm!

    Case closed :)

  17. @chrisw Btw, I remember reading that when changing maps on the 5AM ECUs that the TPS values are kept intact. Any truth to this?

  18. A TPS reset is always recommended after any ECU work. However, most times the TPS value is unchanged when an ECU is refitted.

  19. Do you still have either of these to sell?
Do you in fact know for sure I could flash this unit with Tunecu into a 2002 ST4s with Iaw59m in it now???
    Thanks.

  20. I only bought one of them which I ended up fitting to my 999.

If you can find the BIN file for an ST4s, either 59M or 5AM, then I think the process should be pretty much the same. I used IA5xWriter, not TuneEcu.
