600ss Battery

  1. Hi

    Simple question:

My 1995 600SS is currently fitted with a Dynavolt CB16AL-A2 12V16AH battery and I am thinking about replacing it over the winter. So, should I replace it with a like for like or is there a suggested "upgrade" that I could fit instead?

    Thanks
    Gary

  2. motobatt on the best things I have bought for my bike well worth the money

  3. Thanks johnboy. What is the battery lead upgrade and what is involved in fitting it?

  4. plenty on here regarding battery leads
basically replacing your existing battery leads live and earth with better quality and thicker cables
make your own or some on here I think have bought ready made cables from Halfords

original cables are not thick enough they work ok ish when new
but build up resistance over time

  5. Change the cables to 10mm both earth and starter cable, I've left the original earth leads on too for extra on my 750 and will do the same on my 400 when I get round to it, makes a big difference.

  6. Thanks guys on the leads/cables..... looks like a job for the winter.

On the battery front is it best to stick to a 16AH or go for an upgraded meatier battery?

  7. Motobat MB16AU is a good battery, much more kick than the OEM Yuasa lead acid. I have them on both my M900 and 916 both of which have raised compression ratios and both start first time, every time.

When I had a Yuasa on the 916 it needed to be on the Optimate all the time or after a couple of weeks it hadn't got the oomph to start it. The Monster has an even higher compression but it spins over nicely.

The battery is marginally bigger and heavier than the OEM and I had to modify the battery tray on the 916 to fit it but it drops into the Monster battery holder (same as SS) with no problem, IIRC it claims to have around 20AH?

Some prefer lightweight batteries and that's a good thing but I'd rather have a bike that starts without issue...

  8. Changing the cables is all bollocks.....the OEM cables are perfectly adequate if their connections are clean and tight......

......I'm running a cheap Yuasa lookalike acid battery (OEM spec) that is at least six years old......topped it up twice and charged it twice in the five years I have owned the bike...........it has one cell failing yet it can still spin my engine over OK.
