600SS - Buyers Guide/Buying Advice

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by AFPU, Feb 12, 2013.

  1. Having considered what to get and received some excellent advice from members, I am now leaning towards getting a 600SS as my first Ducati and first bike after over 25 years without one.

Therefore, it would be great to hear from members as what advice or guidance they might provide to someone who is going in search of a 600SS, i.e. what are the things to look out for, questions to ask etc, to ensure that the bike is a good one?

    Look forward to your thoughts.

  2. For detail you could try reading loads of specific recent and current stuff about them on this forum, in the SS section in particular.........the best thing in my opinion is to look for evidence of recent servicing, either invoices from a reputable Ducati specialist and/or paper trail for parts purchases, particularly belts.

And of course, there is the general 'buying bike basics', which everyone should know.......IE, worn chain, bent headstock lugs, bent footpegs, worn tyres, spongy brakes, worn discs etc etc....

IMO a 600 or 750 is a good choice if you haven't been near a bike for a long time.....

  3. Pretty bullet proof, having been around ones being raced for 8 or more ears the numb that go pop I could probably count on one hand. Electrics, carbs, coils of course is a different story but sure its not that dissimilar to most other bikes of the same age

If you can find one with twin discs it helps as the std one disc can get a little spongey, and being the baby of the family loads of bits with the bigger versions should you later choose to improve suspension or chuck a larger lump in it

    great fun bike

  4. I found the single disc 600 no problem for stopping and not spongy at all.
Great engine braking I used my engine with my brake and it kept me out of many a scrape.

If you see one post it up and we can check it out for you.

I think the SS is a great first bike

  5. Thanks for all the advice.

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but I note that some have a rear seat cowling, is this removable to accommodate a pillion?

  6. Yes it is removable
Foggy and whit have signed mine ;-)

  8. It slides onto the seat itself then locks onto the bike

  9. Does that apply to the 750SS as well?

  10. Yes as far as I know :)

  11. if you are after a 600 ss i know where there is one for £1195 doesnt look too bad
guy who owns it has a classic car garage and i think specialise in lotus cars so could be a good bet

  12. johnboy....sounds good. Anymore info or pics or contact details?

  13. I found this one on Motorcycle Supermarket which looked ideal as it was not too far from me, but I have been unable to make any contact with the seller or even the people at motorcyclesupermarket.com.

    Here are a few pics:

Looks like it would make a good starting point especially as it going for £800! Not too pristine in case I make a mistake! But presentable enough.

  14. saw that one in london if i remember
the other one i found was here Alders Classics - Home
its in the cars for sale oddly enough :upyeah:

  15. Looks very good for that money

  16. Yep. The only problem with the on ein London is that it seems impossible to get hold of the seller, otherwise I would have probably bought it by now!!

  17. did speak to the guy at alders the bike is sat in the workshop hardly used mot is out but will put full mot when sold
might be a deal to be had i thought thought he may part for less if bought without new mot saving him the hassle
didnt sound as though he had used it much but i did ask about cambelts and he hasnt changed them and he has had the bike 5 years
seems to think people worry to much
might be a bargain to be had with a bit of haggling

  18. Thanks for the heads up. I'll follow up with him and let you know how I get on.:upyeah:

  19. Many thanks Chris.....I'll let you know how I get on. :upyeah:
