Hi Folks, My lovely little 1997 600ss has what would seem to be clutch drag, it certainly thunks into gear when cold, difficult to find neutral when sitting still, and the gear changes are somewhat notchy, but doesn't drag when sitting at the lights in gear. This , to me, points to clutch plates sticking together, or needing cleaned, however I remember reading something about slave cylinder problems?. Before I strip and inspect, any ideas?. The bike had been sitting for quite a while unused before I got it so sticking plates would not surprise me.. I'm also thinking of fitting a 14 tooth front sprocket, recommended?, seems a little overgeared. Thanks. Alan
Bleeding the clutch slave cylinder is probably one of the simplest jobs to do, so do it and see if it makes a difference. A 14 tooth front sprocket divides people, I’m in the just do it camp and nearly 50,000 miles later, I’ve had no issues. Andy
Mine was exactly the same when cold but once warmed up no problem It didn't like getting into neutral at standstill I would either get into neutral coming to standstill or sit with the clutch in ready to go
Thanks folks. I think perhaps a clutch plate strip and clean may be in order, I bled the system just a few hundred miles ago when I fitted braided hoses. I've bought a 14 tooth sprocket, I'll give it a go and see which gearing I prefer. Cheers, Alan.
I often find it tricky finding neutral if the bike has stopped moving. Once the engine is switched off it's easy.
well the clutch seems to be in the camp of they all do that sir i did find there to be a small adjuster screw on the clutch lever where it makes contact with the master cylinder piston but mine is an injection model not sure if carby version is the same fitted a 14 tooth sprocket to my 750 difference round town was great more usable better acceleration etc but on motorway cruising at about the legal limit officer i found the bike a little like it needed an extra gear
