600ss Fork Play

  1. Hi Folks,
I'm dismantling the forks on my 600SS to clean and fit new fork seals. I noticed a few mm of vertical play. That is, the clearance between the spring top with the collets and the fork top screw is too great. I've looked at the exploded diagram, doesn't seem to be anything missing. Although I'm convinced there must be, the damper rods themselves actually bear on the inside of the top caps?, surely that can't be correct, they're only about 8mm in diameter?. Seems they would eventually punch their way through the aluminium top cap?. Any ideas?. I can of course make a suitable spacer, but wondered if anyone has had a similar problem?.
    Thanks,
    Alan.

  2. Does anyone know what length for spring should be on the 600ss?. Marzocchi forks. I have the spring at 250mm and the spacer at 150mm. They came apart very easily, I just pulled down on the spring by hand and pulled the collets out?

  3. It's a while since I moved my 600 on but I didn't notice any vertical freeplay in mine and I had them apart a lot! The springs were pretty easy to compress though to allow removal of the collets.

  4. I'd agree with Jimmer, the springs should be easy enough to compress with one hand to get them apart, but there shouldn't be any freeplay.
