Hi Folks, My 1998 600SS is all good now I have adjusted an opening exhaust valve clearance from pretty much zero to .004". Anyhow, it's probably revisiting an old question, but where do you folks start off with the amount of turns out on the idle mixture screws?. Mine are at 2.5 turns out right now, mainly because that's where they were when I got the bike and cleaned the carbs. I assume they are air bleed?, so unscrewing will make the mixture leaner? When cold my choke ,when on full, makes the engine rev at about 4000rpm, I don't like that at all, but the idle when warm is just fine. I'll get some miles on it before I start adjusting the idle. By the way, the carbs are syncronised well, but I'll also check them again after adjusting that valve clearance. Thanks. Alan.
Bison, I will have a go at this and wait to be shot down in flames. I am talking about a 900 though, and 600 could be slightly different, so sorry if I confuse things. I believe unscrewing makes them richer. I have just tried to set my air screws. I started off at Horz 3 turns out & Vert 3.25 turns as per some research, and ended up both 5 turns out. I was quite surprised by this but have not had change to investigate much as only just past MOT and waiting on TAX. At the 3 turns it was back firing and spitting in air box. At 5 turns trottle was quite crisp and seemed OK if only on the short run to test centre. Hope its of some help, but I am sure others will add some more meaning full advice, as I would also be intrested. Cheers Gaz
"I assume they are air bleed?, so unscrewing will make the mixture leaner?" Hi Bison, no - it's a fuel bleed so turn opposite direction.
Hi Folks, Armed with that knowledge I have now taken the idle mixture screws out to 3 1/2 turns out and the starting and pickup are noticeably better, thanks. I'll keep experimenting. Alan.
