Hi guys, I've got a small amount of oil seeping from my oil filter, I assume it's from corrosion. my oil levels seem fine, do you think it's something i can wait to fix next payday (bit short on money after Xmas) and do you think a belly pan could stop this happening in the future?
Keep a very close eye on it!! My 999 filter looked a bit rusty, started the bike up on the drive and oil started to p..s out - rusted right through on the front edge of the filter (lucky the fairings were off the bike as I wouldn't have noticed otherwise) - I'd be tempted not to use the bike until it was replaced, you don't want it to dump the oil all over your rear tyre whilst you're riding it!
This is the first i,v heard of rusting oil filters! If it's definitely leaking from a corroded point on the filter I wouldn't use it due to the pressure, it could burst open at any time, get it changed filters are only a fiver. Steve
Chances are it's weaping from the seal. It's either gone dry or was fitted dry. It's quite common for some weird reason. Keep an eye on it, but replace the filter as soon as you can. Change it cold and you'll only loose the oil in the filter. When you fit the new filter, smear the seal with oil or grease and tighten up about quarter turn past hand tight.
Mine rusted through in 5 months I now use K&N oil filters as the std Ducati ones are too thin. If I didn't have dtc I would have binned it as rear tyre was oil soaked when I noticed leaking filter. Ducati didn't even want to know as it was not fitted by Ducati dealer.!
