748/916 Cush Drive problems......

  1. Hi,
Spotted some aluminium filings stuck to the chain lube spots on my 748 rear wheel after a run. On closer investigation, the cush drive rubber outer sleeve has moved outwards, coming into contact with the eccentric hub. Balls!

Anyone know how much Ducati charge for a replacenet set?
Hub off for a closer look and only this one seems to be the problem but pretty sure I have heard of similar issues before on the forums.
Hopefully JHP will have them in stock....

  2. Best to replace the sprocket carrier with a renthal or JT quick release jobbie.
These have little lips that stop the buggers wandering out.

  3. Thanks Nelson,
Just priced one up but as my c&s have only done 2k, I will hang on for a bit. Off to JHP tommorow for me!

  4. I have some spare cush drive bobbins if you just want one going spare, but I probably won't be back down to Scunny till Friday or Saturday.

I have a Renthal quick release carrier if you decide to buy one and some 520 sprockets too, tho I'm not sure what pitch is fitted to the 748 as standard or if you've changed it.

  5. They all do that mate.
Bought a set from JHP about 4 or 5 years ago around the £75 mark I think.
I may have a new renthal 520 sprocket kicking about somewhere as well if you go that route later on.

  6. The 748 is a 520 pitch chain as standard with a 39t rear sprocket.

There are two issues which could cause this to happen.

The first issue is with the cush drive(s) failing and the steel outer breaks away from the rubber and work into the swingarm. For this you can just replace the cush drive, but a permanent fix (if you're too lazy to keep an eye on it!) is to replace the sprocket with a Quick-Release style sprocket holder as some of these have lips in them to stop the steel outer dropping out. It'll cost you around £100-£150 for the carrier and sprocket to suit depending on the make.

The second issue is with the "sprocket flange" which has an internal circlip which can wear and allows the whole unit to move back onto the castellated chain adjuster, and it grinds away both the adjuster and the cush drives.

You should replace the old sprocket flange with the updated type. This replaces the circlip arrangement with a big spacer.
Part numbers are 1601.0211C "Sprocket Flange" and 7141.041 "Spacer" - as used on the 998 as these all came with the update parts - and will set you back around £90 for the flange and £10 for the spacer.

You could have your current sprocket flange turned down and just buy the spacer, but it's knowing the dimensions and finding somewhere competent enough to do it which could cost you more!

    HTH!

PS. For scary pics and step-by-step of how to sort it, see this great thread on the Monster forum (same swingarm hub at the 748):
