748/916 Sensors New Or Used?

  1. I have a 916 sp motor which I have used in a 748
In another thread I have described the problems I had in getting it running
I got it running and it ran well but it drank fuel like a rampant alcoholic
I did a lot of googling and the consensus was the temp sensor for the ECU
I'm afraid I cannot remember where I got that sensor from but having fitted a new sensor it made no difference
I spent hours setting it up and managed to get it to do just under 20mpg.
The next thing that went wrong the banjo bolt feeding oil to the horizontal cams snapped and dumped the oil. Luckily only 500 yards from home.
I decided enough was enough and started to strip the bike and put the 748 sps back in it. I also decided to repaint the frame.
stripping it down I decided to check the air temp sensor. It was knackered.
It was giving a very high resistance. The higher the resistance the colder the bike "thinks" it is and thus dumps more fuel in.
I read a lot of posts from various Ducati forums about high fuel consumption and most of them dismissed the air temp sensor. Which in my case was wrong. It has more influence than they gave it credit for

I don't know if Ducati still supply these or try to find out but there are plenty on E Bay 2nd hand 20 years old none below £30 or--------
Magnetti Marelli 219244250500 fitted to Citroen AX and ZX, Fiat Punto and several other cars. £27 plus postage
    So I bought new
After paint etc put the bike back together with the 916 and hey presto just under 40mpg granted I rode like a softie.
Temp guage barely gets off the stop so that either the sensor or the guage
The sensor is the same as that fitted to the Mk1 and 2 VW Golf a tenner with postage
No difference so its the guage.

I have a spare but it's got a cracked glass. I've stripped that guage and replaced the glass
And now that's fitted to the bike

I also decided to finish the job by fitting a brand new air pressure sensor
The air pressure sensor is fitted to the Citroën Xantia and the Peugeot 205/305 and some Lancias and Fiat's
I can show some pics of the temp guage repair. Cracked speedo are different kettle of fish
