748 belt change

  1. First time changing on 748s
Installed using tipex marks on belts and on pulleys
After rotating a few times I cnnot get the marks on the belts to line up with the marks on the pulleys although all pulleys line up perfectly with the marks on the engine in all places and the tdc mark
The belts have shifted one tooth along so that the marks i made on the belts are one tooth further along than the marks on the pulleys when at tdc
If I reset the pulleys back to tdc and reinstall the belts should this solve this?

  2. Providing the timing marks line up at tdc and on all 4 cams, then don't worry. That's all that matters. If you keep turning the motor, eventually the paint marks will line up, but it might take a while ;)

  3. Well I was intrigued to see how long it took - it was a while but eventually after turning a good long time it all came bck into line so the marks were all lined back up with the marks on the pulleys and lined up with the engine marks as well - thought t might be useful for anyone else in the future looking at the forum to know !
    Thanks Nelly

  5. Tbh as soon as I saw his post I remembered him from Duc Sporting Club!
I knew he was right - just was intrigued to know how long evetually was - it did take ages for them to line up again!

  6. One important thing that I almost failed to do is that you must set the right tension of each belt with no tension on the belt cams. This is done with different positions of the crank as the front is relaxed when the rear is not.

The front belt is relaxed when the markings are aligned and the rear is relaxed if you the turn the crank 270 degrees as far as I remember it.
