748 Not Run For Four Years

  1. I've been offered a 2002 748 that's been stood for four years. The bike has been garaged in the dry for the duration, and was in good running order last time it was ridden. Apart from belts, tyres, new battery and fluids change is there anything else that it will require after standing for this length of time?

  2. A damn good clean of the fuel system - tank + filter, carbs (or injectors) etc.

  3. Yes, and pay particular attention to the in-tank fuel hoses. These can degrade badly if immersed in old petrol for a long time.

  4. Check the rockers (I needed 3 @ 9K on mine) and make sure there's plenty of oil round them before you even try to start the engine. Wheels out and check bearings, clean and check brake calipers are not siezed after standing for so long.

  5. Good point, but just to add, this can happen in new fuel or old fuel. The standard 'petrol impervious hose' used by Aprilia, Ducati, Lancia in the 90's will often fail and perforate after approx 10 years or more.
