748 Revving Problem

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Jon507, Sep 26, 2014.

  1. Hi there, after a 60 mile gentle ride a few weeks ago (with my lad on the back) the 748 has developed a problem. About 40 miles into the journey I noticed when you started to try and rev above 5000 the bike would splutter a little, but still revved up. As i set off home the symptoms got more prenounced and it would try and die if you revved it quickly, so i carefully got it home at around 50. It was lowish on fuel but not very low. Next day guessing it may be fuel I went to the petrol station which is just round the corner and filled it up. Thinking this will have cured the problem off I set, unfortunately as I set off from the traffic lights in the middle of the road, I found out the problem was still there as it tried to die on me, and so I took it straight home. Since then I have checked the regulator/rectifier, general wiring, connectors and earths, tried another ECU and coil, still the same problem. Thinking now, back to petrol....It did have a new level sensor and fuel filter around 500 miles ago (metal Ducati type) so I am reluctant to start stripping it all unnecessarily. Anyone had anything similar happen, sensors, maybe any ideas? All suggestion welcome as I have only limited time (and funds) in the garage (looking after 3 kids at the mo) and could really do with a good run before the ice and snow get here!!!!

  2. as above plus timing sensor can produce similar symptoms - glad you tried another ECU as finding problem should be a bit easier for it.

  3. had running problems on my ss ie one was corroded connections
in the tps plug turns out it was not so waterproof water was running down wires
    straight through the rubber seals
new connector and silicone sealant inside the boot on wires seems to be working so far

silly question have you checked the sparkplugs ? ngk R by chance

  4. Tested the TPS this evening and it had a steady current all the way open and closed so seems ok. Not sure about the timing sensor Chris, I'll have a look at that tomorrow. Thanks chaps. your input is much appreciated.

  5. Put new ones in johnboy, still the same and had a good look at the connector when testing the TPS and its good.
    Thanks anyway m8.

  6. Worth testing the TPS hot. They can begin to fail once to running temp.
Failing that, it does sound like fuel starvation. Possible loose hose from swapping fuel filter or maybe a split hose on the pump assembly

  7. ^ forgot about the split hose possibility - the plague of many an Italian car and bike and symptoms fit well.

  8. Yes I'm thinking that way now Nelly, I will strip the tank tomorrow and have a look and then test the timming sensor and see where we're at. The problem is there cold or warm, it may rev ok first and second twist after start up, but then it starts to stutter and stall down to tick over and will not rev properly then. thanks

  9. water in the fuel?.sludge in the tank overpowering the filter?.

  10. Thanks for the input guys, your support is much appreciated.....just taken the fuel pump out and found the problem straight away!! New hoses me thinks....once again thanks.[IMG]

  11. Using my almost god like powers,I deduce that it maybe possibly, kind of,perhaps be the internal fuel pipes.:upyeah:

  12. your powers of deduction overwhelm me sir...:Wideyed:

  13. Glad to be of help.If youre ever in need in the future dont hesitate to blah blah etc.....

  14. glad you got it sussed without major hassle :)

  15. Make sure you use the correct hose. It has to be able to remain submerged in fuel and handle the pressure. Not much of the hose down the factors will do this. You can get a hose kit from ducati that will relate the lot including new clips. Not the cheapest option, but it's the right stuff and works

  16. I had the same symptoms if on my 916 it turned out to be the fuel pump I tried fuel filters coils plugs all the same jad issues getting home then it ran fine when it finally wouldn't start after a month of being ok I found some dirt in the fuel pump impeller. It also happened if you took it too hogh in the revs the next day it was fine. Pull the fuel pump and check inside pick up.
Good luck liked them so much gotyself 1198 and couldn't sell old faithful.

  17. Hi again, just to reinforce the above posts for anyone else, I replaced all the hoses in the tank with what I thought was good hose....it wasn't, less than 30 miles later the main pipe to the filter had weakened enough to slip off and the bike once again slowly died......Rebuilt at the side of the road in about 1hour, with the help of an excellent young RAC chap and their expensive hosing...Pay the money and get the good stuff.....Thanks guys
