748 ridden to work

  1. Rode my 748 to work today, I don't use it much but I came home fizzing about it. Its a really lovely thing to ride, I rebuilt the motor myself and have done 500 miles on it now. Such a lovely machine, I just need to finish the fairings to make it pretty again, all the splits I have fixed already. Other things like the fuel sender needs replacing and for some reason the rear disc gets a bit hot. I have checked the caliper and it seems OK, I should really pull it right apart and clean all the seals and things. It's no big deal.
Not quite finished as I said, but a real treat. I love the old 748.

  3. check you have some free play on the rear brake adjuster rod, if it has no play it is common to stick on.

  4. Wipe those tears away Pete, you old softy! Birdie, good comment, I think you could be right there, it doesn't seem like there is any free play in the pedal, I'll check that out.

  5. Indeed, mine was like this and the brake gradually came on until the bike wouldn't move and the pads caught fire.

A couple of mm of play and all is good...:upyeah:

  6. I would do the rear caliper sooner rather than later as mine actually caught fire when doing a track day and that was caused by insufficient free play. It completely wore out the pads and destroyed the caliper. Luckily that's all it did as flames were licking out of it when I was waved down by one of the track marshals.

  7. Brings back memories of when I used to use my brand new 748S as my daily commuting bike back in 2000. Was great fun and I couldnt wait to finish work to ride that thing home. Did that for a year before deciding it wasnt the ideal commuting bike so I sold it and bought an R1 instead.
