Hi all, first post 'back' in the circles since using other forums when I had my last 748 - an SP (RxxxRNK if its still around?) Anyways, sold my SP to buy an MV Agusta which was a bad decision as I loved my SP and wasnt too fussed with the agusta. Now, all my bikes are 2 strokes but always wanted another 748 special edition such as SP or R. Now, a 2002 R has been offered to me. Its a yellow one, with full ohlins, spray injectors etc and chassis number and engine numbers correct for an R. The airbox sides are yellow which Im not sure is correct as most images seem to be black or carbon? Its done 10k miles, and has been sat around a year or so as the lads emigrated. The side panels are flat sided correct, but are full panels with the small belly panel and not the half split panels they should have. It was CAT D insurance loss back in 2002 when it wasnt even a year old, but its been offered to me for a good price. Anything I need to check on these, or know in particular?
The fairing seems correct, it is a flat one piece. The airbox on the 2001-2002-2003 should be carbon, it maybe carbon, but if marked in the accident it may have been painted. If its been sat for a while it will need a full service, look at arounf £5-600, could be a bit of a bargaining tool.
Early 748R airboxes were body coloured. The slab sided panels on the R were split and formed a 4 piece set which incorporated the bellypan which was not full length on the original bike. It could have a race setup which is two sides and a full bellypan, there are other options that would fit as well like 998S etc. which is two split bolted sides a bellypan that is open underneath, or the 998R which has a carbon bellypan and carbon sidepanels again three piece. If its been damaged it's likely there are some original parts missing or that have been replaced with different items. Some photos might help to identify any areas that are not original.
Hi, my mate has a 2001r with Ohlins , the lower airbox is carbon and one piece so yes should not be yellow. If it has the radiator vents then it should be a split fairing and no 'belly' like on the later deep sump 998. Here is a pic of my mates, ignore the colour, the camera didn't like strip lights Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
MY02 748R were fitted with two piece unvented fairings similar to the MY02 748S, E and 998 base models although they did have different part numbers, they had no belly pan and had Carbon airboxes fitted. They left the factory mostly like this or this These are Ducati official photos I would recommend downloading the Ducati parts book for that specific model year to get an idea what has been changed from the OEM equipment
Just to add to the debate I have a 748R airbox from a 2001 model and it is Yellow and plastic. 748R's did vary a bit depending on what Ducati had on the shelf. The lack of Ohlins steering damper on some so called full Ohlins models is another example, some were fitted with a stock non adjustable type.
True, on my mates it has a stock steering damper! Weird! Tbf it was only just after the glory days of things like some Senna models having stock pipes, some having race ones Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
This one doesn't have the split in the middle of the fairings, try are 1 piece down the sides. It also has a stock steering damper not ohlins.. Has a yellow airbox, but definitely has the spray bar injectors
And it should have no writing on the front cylinder head? The stock engines had 'desmo' or something similar... And the cam covers should be spaced because the R has wider belts, that way it must be an R Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The large injectors were on all models and they can only be fitted if a 748R frame or 998 frame are used or the frame is modified to allow them to fit. It would need to be gone through to see just what is original and what has\may have been replaced on the bike you have in mind. The 748R engined bike also has one water pipe going round the outside of the frame tube, whereas no other models in the 748 range had this, although the 998 did as well. As mentioned there are other differences that can be seen, heads, an obvious oil cooler, although not unique to the R, Ohlins rear shock on the later models and obviously the Front Ohlins forks where applicable, Marchesini 5 spoke wheels, black graphics on the seat unit and the sides of the seat, which are only stickers but are only on later 748R's. What front brake calipers does it have? it should have P4\34 front brake calipers which have four individual pads per caliper, early models did not.
Here are some shots. It all seems to stack up as an R from what I can tell. I'll try get some better pictures, hoping to go see over the weekend and collect next week
Subframe is wrong and most definitely not the one fitted to the R. Caliper doesn't look right either but I need to check mine to be sure. I suspect that this is a bitza restoration using whatever bits came to hand. May well be a genuine frame and engine but a lot of the other bits appear not. Just re read your first post and as a Cat D that is exactly what it is, a bitza from varioys model year parts. If you want a genuine R my advice is to walk away. If you are happy with bike made from bits go for it but don't pay more than £2500 because that's all the bits are worth. Andy
Messer some more details follow. Check the fairing, I would suspect a racing (cheaper equivalent) fairing has been used and an air box from a MY00 bike. Interesting that both have been changed - is there any other evidence of a prang. Bar ends, footrests, levers, fairing stays can show much. As Andy has said below (edit) this is a bitsa that has been repaired by someone on a budget, buyer beware Further edit. The frame number is within 400 of my MY02 S and has exactly the same format (I may be wrong but I thought Rs had a letter variation), I would put the frame assembly date as April 2001. It will be stamped on the frame. Have you had the numbers validated by Ducati? Here are a couple more. You're bang on about the brake caliper, I thought something was amiss but couldn't put my finger on it until I looked at that beauty of a red one that was on car and classic..
And the price I was expecting to give for it is £3,000 but don't fancy a bista, don't mind a project but not a bitsa.
Clearly there are a lot of wrong parts on this bike for the model year, it looks like it has aftermarket exhausts, the wheels are the wrong colour, as mentioned the subframe is wrong, wrong fairing, the seat is wrong, the brakes are wrong and no doubt with more close up photos there could be other things missing or incorrect. As for price that would be up to yourself and what you want to pay. Fundamentally though it is still a 748R engined bike which if you don't want originality then it could be worth a look. Performance wise it will be better than any stock 748 Biposto and some of those are now going for much more than is being asked for this one. I would weigh it up, possibly make an offer and then go from there. Originality could be restored if you wanted that to happen but would take time and money.
Thanks for all of the replies. Decided to dodge this one, will continue looking for either a 748R/SP, 996S, 998 or 916..
