It's been a few years since I sold my 748SP and always regarded it as the bike I should have never sold. There is a 748SP o want to buy but dont wish to pay over the odds of course. So what should be an acceptable price? It's had 9 owners, done 10k miles and history stacks up. Just serviced and MOTD.
Is it a UK model or an import? I have seen one as high as £25,000!!!!! for a virtually unused one down to about £4,000 ish or less for a not too genuine example. There were a number of Sp's and SPS's up for sale this year. I have a 1999 UK model SPS, one of the last of only 20 sold in the UK in that year. For me a decent price would be £5250. That also has only 10,000 miles from new with full provenance. But I know others have asked a lot more for these models but i would be surprised if they ever got what they wanted. Ultimately they are only worth what the market will stand.
For the SP? For the one in question maybe about 4500? For the R above it looks lovely but as per previous discussions is out of my price range especially so given the weakness of the ££
Sounds it, given all the others that come up now and then, but end of the day its worth what you want to pay.
just had a look...think I wouldn't want to pay more than 3k! Not sure on old 748's and what makes the SP different (guessing cams and maybe engine internals?) but std 748 suspension and wheels wouldn't float my boat. But I'm not buying
My mistake, looks like an ohlins rear unit, just duller than usual There are a couple of others on there to gauge the price from
The SP will always fetch a premium over a normal 748 as they are pretty rare. They have ohlins rear, cast iron front discs, oil cooler, updated rods, pistons and cams and are just generally hotter and rarer than the bips..
The SP was made in greater numbers compared to the SPS. The main difference between the two is that the SP has Pankl Steel Conrods and the SPS has Titanium. The SPS is quite a rare bike in UK spec, only 100 were imported. Plenty of imports of this model have been made though.
Yes, and therefore it should not be as rare as the SPS, however being older more will have been taken off the road for one reason or another. A DVLA check shows the numbers stated to remain, although it may not be that accurate. According to the DVLA there is only one licensed at the moment compared to 19 SPS models. How Many Left?
Though that's not a realistic indication as it depends on whether it was listed as a certain model via the logbook..
Quite a bit really, ohlins forks, later calipers, different body panels, marchesini wheels, different injector system, different belts, different pistons and rods I believe and different cases plus probably loads of other stuff
It depends on the year. Earlier models were more like the SP\SPS the later 2002 model had a lot of what has been mentioned above. The engine cases are in fact the same across all the 748 series however the heads are different and can be recognised by the lack of "writing" on the castings as they are totally plain. A ramp style slipper clutch is also fitted on the R which the SP\SPS does not have. Slab sided body panels were only fitted to later models and early R models feature the same bodywork style of the SP\SPS having the side vents. The R does feature the highest lift cams of all the 748 models and runs wider belts with different belt covers. Engine mounting spindles also vary between the models in terms of diameter. Interchangeability between the R and the SP\SPS is quite high and I have a 748R engined 748S, which I built myself and after setting up by CJS is only 1/2 bhp down on the stock R despite having smaller injectors and airbox.
