Bike running 100% fine until having given it a super deep cleanse wash, obviously too heavy handed wiht the hose pipe After finishing went to start it up to put away On turning the key fuel pump just kept priming & wouldnt stop, cranked ok but didnt fire up After a few days of drying out the fuel pump now primes ok but on cranking over the bike is still no go ! Have swapped the relays with each other under the seat (power off) Removed plug lead to check for spark - No spark on cranking. Could this possibly be an ECU fault Words of wisdom & advice appreciated or someone near me to come over and scratch their head with me to try & resolve. Sun's now shining so would like to be riding not looking !!!
Have a look in the ecu for any water and check the big ecu connector plug by disconnecting it and shaking it out. Separate the air pressure sensor just to the right of the ignition switch, this one often gets water in it (rain or hosed) which sits around one of the three pins. Separate and inspect the round injector(s)/tps connector on the LHS between the cylinders. Separate the 10 way ecu power connector (under front RHS of the seat). Separate the round main front loom/headstock loom connector (below front RHS of the tank) check both male and female sides carefully for hot pins. With all of them they benefit from a silicon contact protector spray so get some of this from Maplins, do not overdo it when you spray it over both sides of each plug carefully to give a light coat to the pins. None of the plugs should have water in them and all of them should be clean with evidence of good contact. If you find any water in them blow it out before silicon spraying and reconnecting, work through in the order I suggest and if you find any water sort that one out and try to run the bike before pulling the next one. My money is on the pressure sensor and ecu plug.
Thanks very muchfor the comprehensive reply, much appreciated - will start the process of checking tomorrow I do however suspect the ECU is fried.:frown: Will post my results tomorrow.
Well after pulling apart the wiring & checking everything it turns out the problem is the ECU. Put another ECU on borrowed from a friend & boom fired straight away on first press of the starter. To double check swapped back to the original & no go. Now wondering if its the EPROM chip or the ECU that's fried, not really wanting to start switching out chips with my mates ECU, as they say if it aint broke dont fix it So simple request - ECU for 748 Marelli - IAW 16M A0 required. Anyone got one lurking in their parts bin they need relieving of ?? Dont worry if standard/mapped eprom as will buy new one for Termi's
It does sound fried Have you tried zapping it with switch cleaner? Trub is these things get wet then have current added which shorts 'em out, however I got lucky on an old 748 when I did the same thing with a hose. Soaked it in switch cleaner, which must have dispersed any remaining moisture and she was away...
I will leave it with the bung off in the conservatory for the day - its like a bloody oven in there so any moisture should evapourate & disperse effectively. I do however think it is possibly beyond saving, However i guess we can all live in hope that this might just do the trick ! Thanks for all your advice much appreciated
Bottom line fried ECU Old unit wont output signal for a spark Anyone have a IAW 16M A0 ECU they wish to sell or donate ? If so please get in touch Thanks
sorry to hear, I was a 'too much water/748' ECU casualty also. Out of interest, did yours have the met grey 'void' sticker covering the rubber bung totally intact?
Hi Chris No it didnt Dont think it would have made much diference anyway as there are vent slots just above the multi connector !
Good idea to add some gaffer tape over the bung. Sorry to hear it's fooked, at least you know the issue now.
Now the fun begins getting a good ECU for the right money in time to enjoy whatever sunshine we get this year. Will have this one hermetically sealed !
Yam, you can try these folks Avanti Race Parts - Ducati Parts and Accessories for Road and Race Motorcycles. Services for Ducati Motorcycles. Race prep, Paintwork, ECU Repairs, Anodising and more! , also I will be seeing Rich Llewellyn (Louigi Moto) later today I will ask him if he has any for sale. If anyone has any Rich will, I will report back this evening.
that's interesting as unless there was a design change there should be no external vents.. there are small circular vent holes in the connector housing, but these are inside the rectangular periphery seal (does yours have one?). True, water will get in anywhere if 'it's' determined, but most (moisture) failed ECU's on ours come about from not having std seal tape or aftermarket waterproof tape applied.
Chris, i was looking at these slots above the pins with the ECU off the bike as you point out. They are indeed covered up when the multiconnector is in place. Sounds to me a sealing sticker is in order for when the next units on the bike.
Yam, one thing you did not say was whether you have been able to do an eprom swap. The reason I ask is that the fuel pump running on like it did is often a problem with the eprom not the ecu. I spoke with Rich and he has a bunch of broken ecus but no working ones for sale. He thought it most likely to be the coil drivers as that is a common failure mode of the ecu. Before you consign the ecu to a lot of money carefully take the chip out, check all the pins are straight and clean, blow out the socket and reinsert it (make sure you get it back in the right way round and properly seated). There are number of ecus available on ebay right now with bin prices starting at £100 .
^ Wise words. I had a bent pin on one of my old one and that sent the fuel pump scatty! I thought it was the pump relay...
Thanks for all your assistance here its much apprciated The fuel pump primes corretcly & runs when hitting the starter, this wasnt the case after washing it just kept priming, but a few days of drying out did the job. Its the spark/low tension/signal side thats no go - So taking your point 2 about the coil drivers it would seem this is what is at fault within the ECU. The ECU is now bone dry, i have removed the EPROM as i was going to put this in my mates ECU to test the EPROM. The EPROM is marked 748SP which is correct for the bike with Termi system We didnt do this as we ran out if time plus he wanted his ECU so he could use his bike this week. With his ECU on my bike it ran 100% fine although it has an arrows EPROM. I guess the next thing to do it to test the EPROM back in my mates ECU to check its OK then get a new ECU. If the EPROM is shot as well then its ECU & EPROM, i doubt its both as the Fuel pump primes all ok etc...
