749 749 Cutting Out Grrrrr!!

  1. ive had my 749 for a year now and I seem to have a recurring and frustrating problem, which can be somewhat embarrassing at times.Latest happened when I came around a corner on the pipe and then unexpectedly had to slow down for roadworks around a bend , after downshifting pulled up to the lights, as I pulled the clutch lever in it cut out!! I had to sit at the lights for some minutes as it would not start for several mins.It unexpectedly flashed up and was able to travel home the forty or so miles with no problems. It happens regularly and it's very embarrassing! I have had a new battery installed and it had belts and service when I purchased it.Its bog standard too with no mods.Has anyone had similar experiences and if so how was it sorted? Any advice gratefully received.

  2. Unfortunately it's a well documented issue with this bike, try doing a Google search and you will see lots of owners with the same problem.
certainly worth considering a T.P.S reset, CO levels and Throttle body balance as a starter.

  3. i've been having the same problems including revs dying mid corner or on motorway. at the moment in the middle of changing fuel filter(one of the guys at lounge's recommended), spark plug check and going from there.

  4. Aye, ours did it more than once too. new front plug did help a bit.

  5. Thanks for your swift reply.Could I dismiss electrical or regulator problems.By TPS do you mean the throttle sensor?

  6. Ok, seems a very similar problem to me, but when engine is under load it's fine,it's when I'm coming off the power and slowing down that it just cuts out. Also starting up can cause frustration too!Hope you sort it out, sounds a cheap fix if it works for you!

  7. Most do this cut out thing....you can fiddle for hrs and still have the issue. Its annoying an crap to have literally.

But a good outfit / duck technician who is recommended would be worth a visit anyway...

  8. Mine did this when I first got it to. Bloody frustrating some times and always when people are about the bloody thing would just cut out. Might be a coincidence but since I've stopped using the cold start leaver (which I thought was a choke leaver) the problem has vanished! I just let her idle for a few minutes when I first start her up and then simply get on and ride. Possibly has nothing to do with the cutting out I use to have but it certainly don't do it now.

  9. mine does cut out ocasionally , but only when on tick over , at traffic lights etc, but never a prob , just hit the button and wait for it to crank over and burst into ear shattering life again !!!!! ( ps , i never use the cold start )

  10. My 04 749s cuts out and it frustrates the hell out of me. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it either. Presently in getting serviced and mechanic has found a corroded relay(the one above the battery box) and he believes that may be the problem. Will post the findings once I get it back Monday.

  11. Also cam timing set correctly and a slight increase in idle speed.

  12. Never been a problem with my 749 but it does occasionally happen just as you described when air filters are getting to a point they need cleaning ( full of dead fly's ) the filters are only small and do attract crap.

  13. The relay above the battery is for fuel pump. Worth replacing regularly and resiting to more accesable place and waterproofing in a rubber glove finger.

  14. also worth a new fuel filter.

  15. Thanks for the info team there certainly seems to be lots of options to sort this snag.I am going to visit a local specialist today to book it in for investigation, I certainly would like to change the fuel filter and balance the throttle bodies! Will keep you posted on the outcome!

  16. Another problem area that has been identified is where the wires enter the bottom of the fuel pump. The bike will run fine but then cut out. Temperature can cause the wires to make or break. The area is sealed with Potting so it has to be dug out to get to the break, then resealed after repair.

  17. My 999S rarely cuts out - it's less than once a month.

I had this sorted by the dealer years ago. I was told that CO level was adjusted from factory standard (something to do with emissions legislation, I was told).

All I know for sure is that the idle speed is higher, around the 1400-1500rpm mark. I consider this a fair trade.

  18. As an aside, it has difficulty starting too! I have a new battery installed, which has not made much difference.I have been advised that these bikes do need a good 30-40 mile ride to maintain the charge. Is it linked to my original problem ?

  19. A decent secondary earth lead is essential.

  20. Not really. I only do 3 miles each way y
Nah don't think so. I only do six miles a day to work and back on mine and it starts on the button every time. Sounds like you need a secondary earth lead.
