Hello, have just purchased a 749 and would like to do some stuff on it myself and learn a bit about the bike. The spanner has just popped up on the dash. My question is which hand tool scanner do people use , not really up on lap tops so prefer obd scanner type tool , also what type of port /socket does the 749 (2006) use and where is it located Cheers peter
JPDiag and IAWDiag (both free software). Cables from LonElec. The 749/999 uses a Fiat adaptor to connect to the diagnostic port (found held by a rubber strap at the front of the battery box. It is a 3 way Superseal connector with two wires into it and should be protected by a plastic cap).
Somewhat overkill, as a purchase, for a 749 (limited in what it can do for a bike of that era) but an OBDStar would do that without the need for a laptop. Maybe someone local to you with one could help out.
Chris is it user friendly for a numpty like me ? And in english And out of the 2 softwares you mention what’s the difference and is one better than the other
They now come with three leads/connectors. The one on the left is the one you'd be using. That then plugs into the main OBD lead that in turn plugs into the OBDStar unit via what looks like a serial port. There's also a DC plug in the side of the OBD connector for another lead with croc. clips that go onto your battery. The other connectors in the pic (middle and right) are for later models and don't need external power. The list of functions that the unit can perform on the 749 are limited to those shown below.
I think those will give you a generic code at best. With no ability to reset service indicator. If you have access to a Windows laptop then JPDIAG, with guidance from others on here, will do what you want at around that price for the correct leads.
