749 749...performance Bikes Article.

  1. I Purchaced the latest edition of performance bikes magazine this morning, it has a nice clutch of articles on mid weight Dukes,748/749/848/899 and the latest 959.

Why do some journo's continue to diminish and underrate the 749/999 series?...the writer describes the 749 as flawed...Quote... ''In time, the 749 became one of a handful of models destined to become regarded as performance bargains for those prepared to overlook the diminished lust factor''...WTF is that about?...I am biased ,owning a 999S I fail to grasp what the diminished lust factor is all about!...or am I just being a drama queen?

  5. It think that without a shadow of a doubt the 749/999 got slated when they launched them way back in 2002. I often heard people talk about the naff swing arm design on this model and the stupid stacked headlight set up. I honestly beleive that this is maybe the 'diminished lust factor' that those journals wrote about and the fact that Hodgson won the WSB crown on one in its first year of competition is often over looked. Personally I love the fact that people slate them. I think it makes owning one even more special. Way back in 92 I owned a KR1S which I loved but was slated by everyone as being a brittle 'ole smoka! Didn't bother me the slightest as if we all liked the same thing live would be boring wouldn't it.
Now I'm just waiting for someone to invent a time machine as when they do I'm going back to get that's for sure!

  6. To me, the 748/848/899 are all beautiful, the 749/999 'gets the job done' and that's about it. The world takes all sorts but the numbers just don't lie, there is a crazy stat that they sold more 1098's in the first year than they sold of the entire 749/999 model run.

If u like it and enjoy it then great for you, you pays your money and takes your choice :)

  7. They are living in 2003 with their comments :) the world and the 749 / 999 has moved on...

  8. 749/999 was too early in its design. Ahead of its time if you like

  10. Absolutely agree...beauty is in the eye of the beholder,i don't give a f@ck if others view them as ugly ducklings... I revel in their being totally different from anything else out there, unique......mines slightly modded but still a 999S... DSC_0711.JPG

  11. Oh aye, they're ugly and flawed....

    Mine is particularly disgusting...

They're going up in value because everyone that's owned one has set fire to them...

Seriously though, I don't care. I'm not a lover of the 748/998. Don't get my juices going. Maybe a 998r at a push.

Don't know how someone could look at a 999r or a 748r and think it wasn't anything but a thing of beauty.

  12. yip. when it comes to looks. opinions are interesting yet worthless.(unless you feel the need for other peoples approval) personally i think the 749/999 is quite possibly the best looking bike on the planet and the 916 is bowf. i hate the fairings on em.

  13. The swingarm is a darn sight more good looking than some of the jap stuff of the same era and the stacked lights were just a bit different at the time. Now the headlights don't look out of place at all. The 749/999 is a way better bike than previous models, look after them chaps, when everyone else has written them off and there are only the looked after examples left prices will rise. Mine is a long term project and keeper.

  14. Both 749/999 stir up emotions and divide opinions. As they say, the one thing worse than being talked about, is not being talked about.

  15. Debates like this will rage forever as we all have differing opinions. If we all liked the same thing there would only be one model to choose from probably. I have a black 999 and a red 1198. The 1198 is much more fun to ride and is blisteringly fast. The 999 however feels much more 'special' to take out, and i probably only see another around London once every 6 months; exclusivity the 1098 series doesn't have.

I also am not keen on the earlier bikes (748 etc) which some see as blasphemy, and i'm not keen on the Panigale either. If others like them then great, good for them.

I still look at my 999 and it makes me smile, i honestly think it is one of the best looking bikes ever produced - call me mad if you will. However, i'm not keen on the series one, guess i am a stickler for the finest details such as the swing arm, nose vents etc.

  17. I think the design is fantastic, it was the stacked headlights that I fell in love with

  18. I know this has been covered a thousand times in this forum, and obviously all individual views are subjective, but I think the decision to go with the 749/999 design after the massive success of the 916/996/998 series was a ground-breakingingly brave one. Initially and largely due to the blinkered motorcycle press it appeared unpopular with the buying public...however,i believe opinions have changed and people are seeing it for what it is, a cracking Ducati superbike that's not run of the mill, the production run only lasted 4 years ,and again then down to perceived public opinion Ducati went totally the other way and brought out the 848/1098,in a rushed attempt to regain what they possibly viewed as some lost credibility...I think they tried too hard and brought out a bike which is too ''Japanese'' in its look....I saw one approaching me once and mistook it for a blade! ...I think they've just about got their mojo back with the Panigale, but I have to say i'm still on the fence with the 959,probably been taking too much notice of them bike mags...:grinning:
