749R Forged Wheel

Discussion in '749 / 999' started by RickyX, Jun 18, 2013.

  1. Just been to the tyre fitters to get new boots put on my 749R trackbike wheels (standard 749R forged Marchesini's)

Tyre fitter noticed a slight radial deflection when looking at the edge of one bead of the front wheel. No lateral (side-to-side) deflections noticed.
Looks like it has been slightly bent at some point in the past.

I haven't had any recent offs or impacts with anything I can remember so I reckon it has been like it is for some time.

The aircraft structures engineer in me says: get it seen to as soon as possible before riding it. Straightness check plus HFEC NDT Inspection.

The tightwad in me says: it'll probably be OK as it must have been there for a while.

    The answer is obvious really.

Anybody got a nice clean Marchesini Forged front wheel to fit 749/999 for sale?

    Cheers,

    R X

  2. Rocking horse poo fella, I've been after F+R for some time for a project but hard to come by

  3. Ricky, as Freak says, these are really hard to find. They were redesigned in '05 to be stronger. I think you're seeing the reason why...

  4. The 749R wheels are the skinny spoke ones, the more wildly found forged March's, a la 999R have the "I" section spokes. Which are you after? A 1098R front is a good copy of the 749R wheels. Can't you get yours repaired? I could be interested in the front if you sell.

  5. Got a couple of ideas about my wheel issue:

    "Dream On" Category Idea:
    - When I was at P&H M/C yesterday getting my tyres fitted, I noticed a very clean and blingy 749R (festooned with every bit of carbon/Ti/Mg that a man could ever want..) sitting there....looked almost like it had never been ridden:wink: Maybe I could nick the lovely gold magnesium front wheel off that while no-one was looking?? Maybe not, Sharpy would kill me!

    Realistic Idea:
    - Take wheel to local wheel refurbisher (good reports received from fellow aviation engineers) and chat about repair/inspection options.

Note to vultures sitting in yonder tree: wheel will not be sold!

    Cheers,

    R X

  6. the 999r wider spoke wheels are actually rarer because they were only fitted in 2003........the ones on the 749R are the same as the later 999R ie 2004 on..............sorry to burst yet another elite 749r myth!

  7. Is there some kind of rivalry/snobbery going on that I have missed?

Just want my wheel fixed - don't care how rare it is!

Have you seen my R? It's a tatty dog of a trackbike with fibreglass fairings, scrapes and dings! Pristine and factory correct it is not!

  8. he hee, not at you.............FE knows where im coming from:upyeah:

  9. That wooden spoon of yours must be huge...................

  10. ...and utterly pointless.

  11.
  12. Ahh, ok. Not as rare as Shakey's back wheels

Ohh, then I have a '03 999R rear wheel on the Monster (also used a a WOW)

The "I" section wheels are the ones Marchesini sell as after market, either mag or alloy.

To get yours reapaired Ricky, use Motorcycle Frame and Wheel Straightening Experts - Maidstone Motoliner Ltd they do a top job.

  13. Yep +1 on motoliner. The turnaround is quick too. They did a very badly dinged front marchenisi from my race bike recently. Tidy job. They also did a bottom yolk and two disks. All came back like new for a very reasonable price.

  14. I have a spare set of OEM wheels for the 749R.. What are they worth then? Bike has BST wheels fitted.

  15. There is a forged 999 wheel on ebay at the moment £190 no bids

  16. Oh dear...they're not worth much really however, as I'm feeling generous..

I'll take them off your hands for £200 the pair...

  17. Wrong end! Already got two of them. Thanks for the heads up though.
    :upyeah:

  19. Collected my wheel from Maidstone Motoliner this morning.

Top job, quick, £75 well spent.
