749 749r Using 14t Front Sprocket?!

  1. Hi,

Im looking at putting a 14t front sprocket on the 749R. I know Ducati from factory used a 15t rather than 14t on the R as it has a little more torque than base model & S model. The idea behind it is less stress on the chain according to all the info available online.

However for road use, and we all keep to the speed limits right???...it is terrible in slow moving traffic, in fact anything under 40mph. I will keep 525 pitch chain and have 38t on the rear (a few more than the standard set up), so one down and few more up.

Anybody running 14t on the R model? I may keep it to 15t and few more on rear, but dont want to overload the chain!

  2. why not put a 41 tooth on the rear.....
putting a 14 tooth on the front makes the chain go around a tighter circumference ...now that does overload the chain....

  3. ...that means I have to buy one then! I did consider, just that I have both sprockets and new chain in garage.

  4. you'll be alright...........not like you are putting 138 hp through the chain.....:upyeah::cool:

  5. Yep, thats what Im concerned about

  6. ...I might settle for just the rear...to be safe!

  7. Got 14t 520 chain on my baby...

Will I ever live my previous gullible comment down??

  8. Holy shmokes!

  9. @Chris.King1 How about a swap? I have a 41t 525 rear and I am looking for a 38...? Mine has done about 1000miles and is a Renthal.

  10. @RickyX I also have a 520 pitch 36 and 39 rear and am looking for something less than a 39 in a 525 - trade?

  11. I have a 525 39T that I don't want but that's no good to you, is it?
Why not just buy one from Renthal?

  12. Happy to swap you the equivalent in a 520? Ummm be causing postage is cheaper than buying new. Also trying to avoid having bits everywhere...

  13. I thought you wanted "something less than 39T" therefore 39T is no good to you as it is not less than 39T?

  14. Would have swopped but that means I don't have the correct chain length

  15. If you want my 525 39T you can have it. Let me know.

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  16. Thanks @RickyX , it was all getting a bit hard, I just went a bought one. Thanks anyway.

  17. @Chris.King1 ...what difference has it made to the rideability of the bike & performance ?

  18. I haven't put it on yet, however I had this set up on my old 749S and found lower gearing much more useable at lower speeds such as in traffic, also felt like it pulled like a train. I got on better with going down on the front and a few up on the rear than just changing out the rear to more teeth.

Reliability wise there was no probs. my concern is that I have the R model which puts out a little bit more torque and by putting a 14 instead of the standard 15t front puts more stress on the chain. However as said earlier in the thread someone is using a 14t front with 520 pitch chain, I will be keeping the 525 set up.

But this was the best set up for me on my S model and the R is a right pain at low gearing, esp in traffic.
