750 Ie Oil Temp Sensor

  1. Hi, I’m wondering if any of you can help with an oil temp sensor question.
I’ve recently fitted a 750 ie engine into my Cagiva Elefant. I broke the whole 750 ss so I’ve used the loom, ecu and all the sensors etc but I have a running issue which was particularly bad this morning as it was very cold. Now it could be a number of things but the one sensor I haven’t connected is the oil temp sensor so i was wondering if the sensor is just used to operate the oil temp gauge or does it tell the ecu oil temp??
    Thanks in advance.

  2. The oil temperature sensor fitted into the oil screen plug simply sends a signal to the oil temp gauge but the engine temperature sensor in the horizontal inlet valve cover is essential for the ECU to provide the correct amount of fuel to suit the engine temperature. They frequently go faulty so worth checking.

  3. Ok Derek, thank you. That was one of the suspects but I thought it was just a sensor for the camshaft for the ignition timing.

  4. The engine temperature is the same as the coolant temperature sensor fitted to many other Ducatis. It is also the same as on the Fiat 1.2 8V MkII Punto and many other Fiats.
It is a temperature sensitive resistor with a negative temperature coefficient and should read about 3KΩ at 25ºC, 5.97KΩ at 10ºC and 9.75KΩ at 0ºC. So in the current ambient temperatures in an unheated garage expect it to show a resistance of between 6KΩ and 8KΩ.

  5. Thanks for the info Derek. I have a couple of spares in the garage as I bought new ones for my 916 engine but they weren’t the problem. The one in the bike is WTS09 which looks quite short and is shy in the collet, maybe it’s not in the oil so not getting hot enough?? I took it out, cleaned it and when I replaced it the bike only ran on one which might just be coincidence and a nod to the real problem ie a dodgy lead.

  6. WTS05 and WTS09 have identical characteristics apart from the ther 09 being shorter. I doubt if that would make little if any difference, so indeed your problem might lie elsewhere.
