750SS 900SS rear huggers

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Paul Train, Jul 24, 2013.

  1. Hi

I don't know if anyone can help but I have made a 750SS rear hugger (moulded from a 2001 bike) and a customer is having issues with the fitment to his 900SS bike (1997) due to the fact that the mounting bracket for the chain guard (moulded into the hugger) is in a slightly different place and the hugger is touching the tyre on one side (but could be spaced to sort).

I am aware that in 2001 the 900SS had a new swingarm but I wasn't sure about the 750SS. I am checking with the carbon factory to see if they have made it correctly as per the sample, but maybe someone out there knows more than I do?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  2. Most of the 600 and 750 carbed SSs had a steel swingarm, while the 900 carbed SS had an aluminium swingarm, of which there are basically two types, different by virtue of the hoop brace section....the later carbed one is deeper.....

.....However, I have just swapped my 750 steel swingarm for the earlier ally swingarm (smaller brace) and the OEM 750 hugger generally fits both OK.

Someone else will have to tell you if the later IE SS swingarm is the same as the carbed SS ally swingarm with the deeper brace, but I have a feeling it isn't as I know the shock is definitely different.

I can see from your photos that the chainguard mounting bolthole bit on the carbon hugger is in the wrong place for the carbed SS swingarm and that the OEM hugger is correct.

  3. Thanks Al

I have a feeling this is only going to fit the ie models

  4. I forgot to mention.........The OEM hugger for the carbed SS steel swingarm and both versions of the carbed ally swingarm should fit all three OK as the ally brace is only deeper in cross section and the increase in depth is 'downwards' so the hugger bolt holes etc should all be in the same place.

If you need to, you can borrow the steel swingarm hanging in my workshop...........I'm only 170 miles away!

  5. Thanks Al

I am waiting for the factory to send me the picture of the original hugger first to try and suss out the next course of action. I have also put a call in to Ducati Bristol who are taking a look also. I will come back to you.

    Cheers
    Paul.

  6. Looking at the pictures above though, I am sure the customer could make it fit as it looks like he only needs to drill a hole to mount his chain guard and space the hugger to avoid the tyre?

  7. Looking at the lower photo, I'm not sure if it is an optical illusion but the carbon hugger mounting bolt holes appear to be wider then the OEM ones under it.....and I can see that the chainguard bolthole thingy bit is in a different position.

Unfortunately I can't see in the top photo where the chainguard bolthole in the carbon hugger actually is in relation to the chainguard top fixing lug.
