750ss - Bike Running Fine But No Battery Light On Dash

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by Amentia, Jul 17, 2014.

  1. Hi,

I have recently had some electrical problems with the bike, but these have been solved by a new reg/rec and a new solenoid. The only electrical issue I have now is the battery light on the dash doesnt light up at all.

I have checked the bulb, and replaced it with 2 new ones I had lying about, and that has not fixed the problem. I am aware that this bulb should only be lit up when the charge back to the battery is low, and it should go once the bike is reved as seen on my dad's 900ss.

The charge going to the battery is fine, and the bike is running without any issues. Just wanted to suss out why this is happening.

A side issue is that my right side indicators flash normally, but the left side flashes double speed. I would have said flasher relay, but it would be odd that only one side is affected.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Cheers

  2. If you have a new reg/rec, have you wired it up correctly?

See below.........a lot of mistakes are made with the white wires, which need to be connected to make that light function.

Check your indicators all round.........double speed on one side usually means a bulb has failed or isn't making proper contact..........or, it could be that one bulb is a much lower wattage than the other three.

  3. Al if you produced that wiring diagram yourself, there are self help groups available, no need to feel alone!

  4. Assuming you mean the charge light? I'm not sure if this is the case for SS models but on 916 models, the early ones had a functioning charge light where as the later models didn't - it's still there just doesn't work as the reg/rec doesn't have the facility in it.

I would think SS and 916 used the same reg/rec and it therefore is probably that the replacement is of the later no charge light version?

  5. The SS has a 'Not Charging' light whether it is an early version SS or a later one......

If the OP has fitted an RR51 reg/rec, it has the Not Charging wiring.

I did do it myself because the Electrex wiring instructions are sh*te.............many people have had issues with the defunct and used wiring...........I had to ask questions when I first got my SS, because it had an RR51 reg/rec which wasn't wired correctly, so I thought I would save others the trouble of having to research it or bugger up their reg/rec.

  6. Thanks for the first class wiring diagram Al, I've just been looking at the 400 and thought I had lost some of the wiring loom bringing back as i have the redundant wire just hanging there! Better that the Haynes!!

  7. Sorry for the slow reply. I've not been on in a while.

The regulator rectifier was a plug and play job. The wires going to the reg/rec on the loom ar 2xred, 2x black, 2x yellow.

Even with the old reg/rec, the light didnt come on. I thought it could be a bulb in the dash but i double checked that when i replaced the reg/rec.

  8. Well.......the two yellow are obvious.

I suspect one of those blacks should make that light work.

Are any of all the wires thicker than the others?

Try checking against the diagram above (of the OEM version, in which the red/black is 'live', but I can't recall if that is 'always' or only when the ignition is switched on).

  9. I put an aftermarket rectifier/regulator on my M750 (same engine as 750SS) and lost the wraning light. It dosen't bother me now.
To test, turn the lights onto full beam and see if it get brighter when you increase the revs.
