796 Front Brake Master Cylinder.

  1. Hi guys, newbie Trev here. looking forward to the forum. I am a recently retired ferrari mechanic so i'm not without experience and common sense, however nobody "knows it all". Recently purchased a 796 monster and after about a week the front brake was a bit spongy. couldnt get to my vac pump so decided to just pump a bit of fluid through with the lever. Supprisingly with the top off, everytime i worked the lever it would squirt fluid out of the reservior, as though the seals had flipped and pushing fluid out of the "feed" hole in the m/c..I am supposing the m/c is goosed but funny thing is the brakes work, albeit a fair bit of travel and a bit spongy. At this point i should also point out that it has Titax shorties on and i am querying the grub screw adjustment. I would normally say" Dont mess with the brakes , lets just fit new" but i am curious as to weather anyone else has come across this. Some years back i had an issue on the 748 with the brakes coming on when warm and ended up forking out for a new m/c only to find it was a badly manufactured spurious lever that was at fault. Dont want to spend £££££'s unneccessarly

  2. So guys, here's an update on my master cylinder problem, a bit of useless information for you. After supposing the piston/seals may be coming out too far causing the displacement of fluid when operating the lever, i decided to adjust the "free play" grub screw on the Titax shortie, only to find that some PRATT who fitted them had neither adjusted nor loctited the screw and put it in the wrong way, Yes thats right the allen key hole was pushing the pushrod , no way to adjust it . I removed the lever , put the screw in the right way, adjusted, loctited and road tested to check for expansion/ free play when hot and guess what......problem solved. The moral of the story.... if you dont know what you are doing, leave the F*** alone :)
