So after last weekends many attempts before blast off I've plugged in the 821 for a few days to its new Ducati optimiser and yesterday on second attempt it fired. A neighbour came round this morn and I attempted to show of the termis but it just turned over and popped! After 5 mins of trying it got going and ran fine, I rang manchester to be told I may have gassed the plugs because I'd started it yesterday and didn't allow it to warm up properly and not to fire it up for very short periods. I'm not sure what exactly the issue is but I suspect once it's being run properly and regular it will be fine but can someone please explain what I've done wrong or if there's a certain start up procedure? Never had any of these issues with 4 pots and obviously Ducatis are special.
All I do is pull in the clutch and press the starter button (don't use any throttle - don't even touch it). It turns over a few times then fires up. Never failed me yet! The dealer might be right of course - maybe you did gas the plugs if it hasn't been run and properly warmed up. Take her for a nice 10 mile run on a dual carriageway.
Cheers Herbert, I have been giving it gas to start tbh maybe I've just got to get the knack of it, they have offered to take it in for a look but I'm sure a decent run would help her...have to wait for the thaw now:angry:
Hope you get it sorted. It's my first Duke too and I'm hooked. I hope your experience doesn't affect your impressions of the brand. The after sales service is always good from the dealers and the manufacturer so if there is a problem I'm sure they'll be keen to fix it.
No Herbert it's not worrying me I have total confidence in the dealer and the bike is well in warranty, I'm looking forward to some rides out with the dealership come summertime. I did try an 848 for a couple of months last spring but never really felt comfortable with it, it was gorgeous but as a race bike I never really got to grips with it. I've had the best Jap racers but find them characterless if easy to screw the plumbs out of. The monster is something totally different, I found the 848 a bit clunky the 821 is silky and very easy to ride as you know. It looks a big bike but feels very small and nimble after a gixxer 750? I sat on the 1200 at the nec in 2014 and thought, wow this bike just fits me! I may progress to the 1200 but a test ride of the 821 had me hooked, even on a wet Wednesday in central Manchester! Glad your enjoying yours! Mines costed in acf50 now so I'll be out when it gets back to 3/4 degrees and it dries up a bit. Can't wait....
On my 996 I removed the cover and OptiMate, give her a little stroke around the tank, fairing, tell her how much I love her and she's the only one for me, key in, let the fuel primer have a little whirr, check she is in neutral and press 'GO' with no cold start and not touching throttle. Mr @Exige may be required for you.
A few things I've learned from my bike, reading various posts and owning lots of bikes: If you're not riding for a couple of months, use a fuel stabiliser Always let the startup routine (instrument check etc) finish before hitting the start button Fuel injection - don't touch the throttle until it's started Either pull in the clutch a couple of times before hitting the button or keep the clutch pulled in when starting Use an Optimate Hope this helps.
Well I couldn't resist trying it today and success! Clutch in, no gas atall, gentle tank rub and fired on the button! Im sure it was a combination of battery dip and me flooding things. A knack to everything I guess...
