848 Cam marking

  1. question for any of the techy's on here please

Had a valve service today and the tech showed me a bit of marking on the exhaust cams (larger lobes) and little bit on the follower for both cylinders.

His opinion was that it hadn't compromised the hardening so leave it alone but i wonder if it's been seen before and something to worry about down the line.

Bike has 7.5k miles, road use only. Also 2 shims need replacing (gone tight)

  2. Wish I knew what you were talking about

  3. Get it fully checked out at the next desmo service (15k?) if they are marked any more I would get the replaced

  4. Yeah that was the conclusion i drew with the tech but he was at a loss to explain the cause. Only on both exhaust cams. When he saw the first mark he said maybe it was a bit of swarf but when he saw the same marks on the other cylinder exhaust cam we knew that was not the case.

I can live with new cams at 15k if i still have it but i hate mysteries and there seems to be very little reports of cam hardening issues or anything that could point to a cause.

  5. Having just become the proud owner of an 848 please don't tell me there's the possibility that it may eat it's cams like my 748 did! I thought those issues were in the dim and distant past.

  6. Never heard of them doing it so enjoy your 848 :upyeah:

  7. This is the first time I've heard of 848's doing it bradders, hopefully it'll be the last time too! :upyeah:

  8. Having asked around i found one other 848 owner who had it (Moto Rapido replaced the cams i beleive) and a 1098 owner also.

This is not mine as mine is nowhere near that bad yet, but similar type of marking

  9. Spoonz, I take it your bike is still under warranty? Last time, on the 748, I had to pay for the reconditioned followers and luckily the cams could be cleaned up without a replacement being needed. Made for a VERY expensive service.

  10. Afraid not, out of warranty by 5 months.

i'm working on the theory that i might not have the bike by the time the wear becomes an issue. Assuming it wears at the same rate or at all.

It seems more than luck that mine and the other 848 had tight exhaust valves. In the mechanics view, too tight to have come from wear given the mileage, so probably tight from the factory. Maybe that has caused an issue.

Had the wear been bad enough to require new cams i would be talking to Ducati Uk for sure.
