848 - Chain and sprocket options - for Donnington...

Discussion in 'Trackdays & Rider Skills' started by comesunt, Feb 12, 2014.

  1. Hi All,

The work on converting the 848 (2010 - non evo) to a track bike continues; but at a slower pace as I'm working away from home at the moment...

When I get back I'll be putting on the Ohlins TTX shock, ride adjuster and Sharks fin (cheers Bradders)

Next thing to consider whilst doing this is chain and sprocket options; and I thought that I may as well do that at the same time...

I'm thinking of going for a 520 system, with a 15 on the front (less tension on the chain apparently) but what about the back? I'm keen to discover how many teeth I can change and still keep the chain length the same; I'm hoping for three different rear sprocket sizes, one tooth apart...

I think that a standard rear is 39; so thought about going for 41,42 and 43?? Thoughts? Is that not bold enough?? I'd like to run the wheelbase as short as possible, as I like to turn into a bend knowing I can probably cut a tighter line than the guy in front. I've got my 748 set up really nice, and want to match that on the 848 as best I can, but the 848 doesn't have the option of adjusting the head stock angle... I've got the 748 pretty much on its nose, and want to do the same with the 848, so thinking that a short wheel base may help, plus raising it at the rear a bit...??

I'm trying to get it set up specifically for Donnington, and then perhaps Brno... Any advice on combinations would be much appreciated...

Finally; any recommendations of rear sprocket carrier; both to lighted the rotating mass, and make sprocket changes easier... Seen a few out there, but though I'd ask first before I buy...

    Many thanks,

    Bob

  2. The only thing I have to add is that it's worth considering the clearance to the swingarm; ie where it runs through to the gearbox sprocket at the top. I imagine u can go 15/42 but not sure about how big you can go before u get issues under load.

I used a renthal sprocket carrier on my 748, it was a lovely piece of kit, weighed nothing and the sprockets were only 20, I was using it on the road though so just kept one gear on there, can change them easily though with the hub in place.

  3. Thanks Phill...

How big had anyone gone on the rear??

    Thanks,

    Bob
