848 848 Has No Electrical Power

  1. Help needed!

    My 2008 848 has just gone dead on me. Turned on the ignition, everything fine for a few seconds then it went dead.

    Battery is still showing with voltage, turn the key on and the voltage goes to zero, turn it off and it comes back on. Bike Trac is sending me battery disconnect alerts and my alarm keeps going off.

    All the fuses look fine but don't have a proper way of testing them.

    Main fuse just left of the battery looks fine as well.

    Anything I'm missing?
     
  2. You really need to get a meter on the battery to start with.
    There may be voltage but the battery may be duff.
    Check the relays to the right of the battery box. There are two. The rear one is for the injectors/coils/pump and is know to cause problems. Always worth replacing this with a 12v 4 pin micro relay.
    It's a process of elimination to locate the cause.
     
  3. It feels like something past the battery, tested all the fuses and all ok.

    The disconnection alert when turning the ignition on is still happening, if the immobiliser was playing up would I get anything showing on the dash?

  6. They can be had for under £2 off ebay, slightly more from the dealer. Just replace.

  8. Could the relay be responsible for killing all power to the bike?
     
  9. The most likely culprit is the battery. The electronic systems on the bike are voltage sensitive. Personally I would swap out the battery and see if that cures it.

    The relay can cause all types of problems due to verdi gris from water ingress. These should really be a service item. If you don't know when they were last changed then change them now. The two by the battery box are for the fans and the coils/injector/pump.

As you mention lots of Bike Trac alerts my first port of call would be to ensure that the battery leads are on tight, both ends, in case the alarm is correctly sensing loose battery connections. Next, I'd be looking at the alarm itself, the number of people that have electrical problems traced, eventually, to alarms, is high.

  11. silly question but have you checked the battery terminals are done up tight?

    earth straps can vibrate lose.... could it be the bolt has vibrated out? worth checking and then the battery as chris has said.

  12. After all that fuss it was nothing more than a dead battery, problem solved and back on the road, although £100 lighter.
