Hello, Im new to the forum but been scanning old posts for a while. Got my heart set on an 848 after just getting rid of my gen 1 RSV Mille. I try and do a few track days a year, could any of you 848 owners out there tell me if the DB levels have been a problem with standard and/or after market cans please ? After a lot of research it seems like the newer Ducatis are much more reliable than the older ones, any input on this ? And finally, are real life running/servicing costs as reasonable they sound ? Will probably do around 6k miles a year on it. Oh, one last question, anything that I should be looking out for when buying one apart from usual servicing history ? Any input would be massively appreciated. Thanks Monkey
Welcome. You should get plenty of answers to your questions here. Depending on what cans you have it might struggle at a couple of days but nothing that the right baffles cant sort. Mine has the slash cut Termi's and without baffles its about 102DB. Baffles obviously reduce this significantly. A newer bike is likely to be more reliable than an early one but making sure its been well looked after is critical. Look for a full history (ideally Ducati) which shouldn't be too hard and see how the owners looked after it in between. Your local dealership will give you servicing costs. Check out the cost of the belt change services and decide from there. Its likely to be more than a Jap bike to run but at the end of the day its probably only a matter of a couple of hundred quid a year if that. Obviously independent servicing may be cheaper than main dealer so check that out too. Have fun and post pics when you get one!
Thanks for the reply. 102DB without baffles has surprised me, thats good news as most track days are around 105DB. Most bikes advertised seem to have full dealer history which is good. I did all the work myself on my RSV but it was old, dont think I'd fancy some DIY on a ducati. Will get a few pics up soon as I have it dont you worry !!
Belt changes are simple, I've done a pair in under an hour on my track bike, and about 15 minutes of that was getting body work and tank off. It just makes people nervous doing such a critcal job themselves. The only routine servicing I hate doing is valve shimming. But at 6K a year if it's been done recently you won't have to worry about it for a while. Hope you enjoy it
