848 shock removal shocker !

  1. Race prepping the 848 continues...

I had an hour to kill....

I've removed the shock on my 748 in about half an hour; so thought that it wouldn't take much longer for the same for the 848, despite the fact that I seem to need an allen key to remove anything... (748 tank, fairing and seat unit off with only one bolt... A pleasure to work on - the 848 not the same it seems...)

    Just for once I decided to read the manual first;

Fairing and belly pan already off...
2 screws - Removed the seat, ( Plus 4 bolts as I removed the rear foot peg hangers whilst at it )
11 screws - Removed the side panels
4 bolts - removed the rear cowling
2 bolts - removed the exhaust heat shield...

Its now dark and time for my dinner...

Tomorrow think I'll have to remove the exhausts tail pipes to get to remove the number plate holder and rear indicators; then I might finally get somewhere near to the rear shock...

    Hmmmm.... :frown:

  2. does the race fairing really have so many bolts screws on it?

  3. Do you have the rear lamda sensor fitted? If so you are in for a treat when you try and put it all back together!

After you've done it a few times you can, just, wrangle it out without removing all that rubbish, more like a 748

  4. Race fairing not on yet, but yep... all those on the original... Quick release fixings going on with the race fairing...

Agree that it all probably does not need to come off to get to the shock, but need to take most off to junk it / swap...

Not sure I need to drop off the end cans to get shock off, but looks like the number plate holder bolts from below, so pretty sure that will have to go...

I have a day of so off work, so not too bad, but glad I didn't stick with plan A; which was to do all this one morning last week before loading up for brands...

Target for completion, for 25 March No Limits Trackday at Donnington... Need to swap the shock and fit ride height adjuster, fit slipper clutch, ditch all lights and fit race fairing, fit brembo master brake cylinder (and work out how to mount reservoir), fit twin brake lines ( now I've found my single banjo bolt from eBay that I wrongly said had not turned up....) buy and fit gear indicator (can't count past two gear changes), fit loads of crash bungs, buy and fit stomp grips...

Oh, as off work, spend time with wife and kids and walk the dog... And drink beer...

  5. This is true! Use a tap spanner on it if you have one from the left of the bike.

  6. Ok, thanks... I didn't get that far last night, and now my day off had been interrupted by a visit into work... I have a full race system and matching ECU so I think that I won't have the sensor fitted anymore? but thanks for the tip...

This will probably have to wait until tomorrow now...

    Cheers,

    Bob

  7. I feel your pain. 748/916 is a doddle to strip down. 1/2 hour and all fairings, tank, seat, airbox off. My 1198 is a bleeding pain. 1/2 hour and the fairing is off only lol.

  8. Not only swapping the shock, but ditching stuff I don't need too...

Worked out that I didn't need to take off end-cans to ditch reg plate holder, but the worked out that I did need to pop out to halfords to get an allen key long enough to reach the reg-plate mount bolt... Reg plate holder than say there swinging between the end cans before some not so TLC managed to free it...

Good news is that I did manage to pick up the race fairing today, ordered gear indicator to arrive tomorrow, and clutch locking tool the day after. Old rear shock still in place, but hoping for a more constructive day tomorrow...

  9. depending on seat you are fitting you may need a new undertray.

  10. I picked up the fairing that I got off Harry today; they're still in the car, so not sure what will fit right now....

I'd like to get an aftermarket seat for more adhesion, but planning to use the standard one for now as funds are running dry....

Still have visions of my brother after he polished his MX bike, including seat, and seeing him fight to stay on it ;)

  11. get some cloth and cover it, staple gun and some patience is cheaper than replacing

  12. Swapping the shock nonsense continues.

Quick cup of tea this morning whilst reading a guide from another duc' forum where it stated 20 min job...

    Oh really...

Ride height rod comes off a treat, so does top bolt of shock. Bottom bolt releases but doesn't extract, so the bottom of the shock won't release. Think I must be missing a trick here so phone up two renowned Ducati dealers. One says, "Hmm.. not heard of that before, you might have to take the swinging arm off to free it... The second says, "Heard of that once before, guy had to drill swinging arm to punch through from the other side, then get hole welded up..." Great....

About an hour later, I managed to pull it out by giving it a lashing of WD40 and inserting similar sized Torx bit into the head of the allen key bolt, push down to apply grip and wiggle it free... I think the serrated edge of the torx bit helped to grip it as I could not do the same with an allen key...

Next issue, I think the full termi system that I had fitted to the bike when delivered has fatter link pipes than standard, preventing the swinging arm from dropping down far enough to extract the shock. End cans off, exhaust springs off, link pipes not moving. I hour + WD40 plus loads of head scratching they came off... Half the day gone...

Now getting ready to put new unit on... No wanting to be pessimistic, but what's the next problem I'll encounter... Cup of tea and an oily, then I'll get going...

    Wish me luck... Please...

  13. Good luck! You've done the hard bits now surely  Home free from here on in......20 minute job!

  14. Nope, the std system doesn't allow it t drop far enough either...road bike to take racing mot race bike on the road...first major shift of emphasis imho was this models

It will come out without taking everything off btw but takes a real knack and a few bleeding knuckles

  15. Quick update, just finished on the bike now... for today at least...

Thanks for all the advice. What I have learned today...

As suggested by a few, the rear seat cowling does not have to come off to change the sock. I was using the guide thatI downloaded from here Workshop_Manual_848 I tool the seat and cowling off, but it wasn't too much of a pain as I was swapping it for a track fairing set...

Manual has got a few strange things, like suggesting that the bottom shock bolt extracts from the right hand side, whereas on my model (2010) it is accessed from the lead hand side...

Despite a guide found on a US forum, I can't see how the shock can be replaced without taking off the link pipes. Once that was done, then it was a doddle...

Thanks for all the tips... Much appreciated...

    Rgds,

    Bob

  16. When you racing it? And where?

  17. Doing the No Limits 6 hour endurance at Donnington on May. Event is Sat / Sun (17/18th). Our race is on the Saturday...

We might do more this year now the bike have been given some TLC, but will wait till we've done Donnington race and NL Brno trackday ( July I think...)

Not booked up yet (bad admin) but looking to get 848 out for her first trackday with NL on 25 March at Donnington. I've only done Donnington once on the 748 about 12 years ago... Not fun as she was poorly ( before the loose alternator nut problem was well known).

Will probably go in the inters and expect to run at the back of the pack in the morning; but hopefully get a few to drag me round in the afternoon... fancy it?? Main aim is to learn a few corners and get suspension set up...

I should be putting your sharks fin on tomorrow; so many thanks... That should be the back end sorted, less a new chain and sprocket set, but I'll be running standard gearing for the 25th...

    Cheers,

    Bob

  18. Get an instructor to take you round a few sessions.

  19. What's the trick then to get the shock out without stripping everything off. Tried tonight banged head on wall repeatedly. Came across all the problems mentioned in this thread. Lambda and exhaust (road system) in way not enough room then for swingarm to drop. Lambda's a bugger to get at aswell.

  20. Excuse brevity, but using iPhone and somewhat pissed...

Only way I found was to take off exhaust mid section, which you can't do until you take off the end cans; that let's the swinging arm drop lower to allow the shock to come out... Pain in the arse, but the only way (IMHO)
