848 Won't Start After Washing

Can you scroll through the errors on the dash to get the error code?

 

Antenna around ignition lock. Seen it a few times and always been post washing. If you lift the plastic shroud, it's clipped in there. Have a look along the mould line of the plastic ring for green residue (copper oxide), if there is any, replace it. Short term, dry it out with a hair dryer.. it may resolve the problem.

 

Water in front plug well, I'll bet

 

As Nelly says, water ingress on the Antenna. If there is no Verdi Gris you can improve things by putting washers on the antenna shroud bolts. This lifts the antenna up towards the key chip by a mm or so (depends how many washers you use).

 

Check what Nelly said, it takes less than a minutes

 

Stop washing it.

Just drape a piece of soggy kitchen roll over the front for 15mins to get the squashed buggers off. Stop riding through the car wash.

 

I've just wet-wiped mine all off the front

 

Carbon Fibre Key Guards

Some Ducatis have an ignition switch that is surrounded an immobilizer antenna that is covered by a factory-supplied plastic key guard. The RF signal from the key has to pass through the key guard to reach the antenna. The key guard also shields the antenna from the rain and wash water.

Some owners have replaced the plastic guard with an attractive carbon fibre aftermarket unit.

Carbon fibre should NOT be used as an antenna cover. A radio frequency signal does not pass through carbon fibre easily because carbon fibre acts as a Faraday cage. Placing an antenna inside will attenuate (reduce) the signal.

There are reports of Ducatis failing to start reliably or experiencing intermittent shut downs/full loss of electrical power that has been traced to aftermarket carbon fibre key guards.

Forced water infusion from thunderstorms and from water hoses during a wash can also interfere with immobilizer function and cause antenna corrosion. Aftermarket key guards may not be as effective in keeping water out.

 

Soak them with a wet cloth for a couple of minutes, works like a charm.

 

I had a carbon guard on mine for years with no issues, I seem to remember I had the antenna issue after washing. I put a couple of cable ties below it if I remember rightly to lift it up slightly. Sorted the problem.

 

happened to my 848 as well, got caught in the rain and then wouldnt start. Had to put in the code manually and then started, did the washer trick and all sorted

 

On my 916, its usually water in plug hole of vert pot. Squirt of wd40 fixes it.
