848 848evo Can't Get Enough Sag At The Rear

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by CRYSTALJOHN, Nov 10, 2014.

  1. I have been trying to set the rear sag on my newly acquired 848evo today. It felt as stiff as a board so I wound off what pre load was already there, took ages using my C spanner but I got there in the end. Now I have wound it right back so there is no more adjustment. I can't measure the sag accurately as I was doing this on my own, but I would take a guess that I don't have more than about 10-15mm with me sitting on the bike fully kitted up.
I seem to recall reading on here that these bikes came like this from the factory, but I didn't pay enough attention at the time as I had a 749S previously.
I presume I am going to have to buy another spring to suit my weight which is about 11 1/2 stone.
I don't suppose there is a sort of 'exchange your spring with somebody else's' website any where?

  2. You need a lighter spring. I didnt, but for road even me, a tad heavier, ideally it was a
    Ittle stiff

  3. I did have an odd bod spring on a bike and got an exchange price from a local suspension shop. If it's a bog std spring though you might have trouble.
Might be worth getting a whole suspension setup if you're getting into it.

  4. I'm 11 stone'ish. I got used to it :)

  5. Lighter spring it is then Paul. How do I know what I have in there atm, there is no visible writing on it.
I want/need to be able to use the full range of the shock, not get used to something that isn't right.

This is the first of the many bikes I have owned where I have had this problem. What on earth were Ducati doing to spec a spring of this rating. I would have thought I was of overall average weight.
Anyone heavier than me want to swap out there spring which might not be right for them?

  6. I'm nearly 13 stone suited & booted and mine's hard as nails too. Apparently the are sprung for rider and passenger from factory which is why they are how they are.

  7. Hadn't thought about the passenger as I never take a pillion, but that explains it. Many thanks Ian.

  8. John, before spending money have a mate (or take a tape to the next boxhill coffee club meet ;) ) help set up with minimum sag and see how close you can get.

If you can defo find out if std, you cam use this lnk to track dowm what it likely is and what it shoukd be for your weight Page

  9. Paul I'm absolutely certain it's the standard spring. so I suppose I can contact a main dealer and ask what the rating of it is, then get the next size down. I did find when I fitted an Ohlins shock to my 749 that had a 90Nm spring in it, which according to the chart was right on the cusp for my weight of 11 1/2 stone ,so I had to back that right off too to get the sag I wanted. I really don't want to start forcing pies down my throat so I need to get a lighter spring!

I did have a very fine crew at Bury recently helping me to measure my sag on the 749, and hope to use their services again shortly.

  10. Paul I have looked at the chart, only goes up to 2011, mines a 13. Have you any idea what 'Call' means in the data field? I can only guess it means phone them.

  11. 8.7 std, 7.5 recomended on a 1098 showa unit which is same as 848

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  12. Thats the right model, unless you have an SE with a ohlins, in which case use the 1098s as its the same ohlins unit

    • Thanks Thanks x 1
  13. Got it. Cheers mate.
