899 Or R1m

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by Fantazia, Aug 22, 2016.

  1. Have just been offered a r1m for my 899 and some cash never been on a r1 before but love my 899 any info would be good

  2. The R1M in the early days was what Josh Brooks was riding in the BSB. Saw him testing at Cartegena and it was quick lapping in 1:33. No-one seems to be able to make it competitive now but nothing sounds like it at full chat. With the cross plane crank, it is claimed it rides like a V4. Not many out there so not much of a chance for a test ride. Big leap in the dark. Andy

  3. Does make me laugh how much hype they made about the r1 which has been less than impressive in racing.

I know racing is immaterial because it's a road bike... BUT the new r1's are marketed as a race bike on the road. And seeing as it isn't much of a road bike, twitchy light switch throttle and rock hard seat and ergo's I think that this is a problem.

However they're great track bikes, if you're talented enough not to shunt one. Then it's a huge money pit.

Depends what you want from a bike imo.

Oh and the brakes are shit. Lack feel. Yam should of used m50's God knows why they didn't !

  5. R1M :Bag:

  6. Mainly I would use it on road but think it might be a bit of a hand full

  7. Ride one, the basic r1 isn't much different.

Honestly though it's not a great road bike pal.

  8. I had the first generation Big Bang R1. And I currently have an 899. I'd have the 899 all day long.

  9. R1m for shure, just check if the recall for the gearbox is done, or if it does affect it.

  10. I test rode an R1 a couple weeks back and much as I love the Ducatis, I'd have to go for the R1M over the 899. It's a different class of bike (as long as the gearbox has been done!) so I guess it depends on if you want a big bike over the more friendly 899? The spread of torque is very impressive on the R1. It's rubbish at going slow though so don't bother unless you are going to use the speed. It didn't impress me enough to consider trading in my S1000RR and I'd much prefer an 11 or 1299 but I'd be seriously considering it over an 899. I don't think the build quality compares well to Ducatis and the R1 is no where near as good looking but it definitely rides well.

  11. I've brought one R1M Great Bike and i have a few ducatis

  12. Thanks guys for your input

  13. R1m....the 899 cant compare (sorry), 1299 and r1m is what you should be looking at and if you dont want a bike that's similar to your 899, the r1m is the way to go

  14. Have you ridden them all? Or just read about riding them all?

  15. I haven't rode a the (m) version of the r1, which should be (similar) to the standard one shouldn't it? Does that qualify me enough to make the opinion on this thread?

  16. Of course you can have an opinion. Just not the wrong one :p

  17. Going from the 899 to the R1M you'll feel like the R1 doesn't have any brakes.

  18. I think id have to go with the r1m I think - ive not had a yam for 25 years odd and sadly an r1m is way out of my league....brakes is an easy fix...most stuff is....

  19. Apparently it isn't though. The calipers are crap but the issue lies mainly with the servo.

    Not an easy fix
