899 Panigale Setup EBC,DTC,ABS

  1. Hello all,

    I know the bike is new out so many people have not had a chance to play with it yet but has anyone given any thought to setting up their own individual preferences for Race, Sport and Wet mode?
    Here is what I am proposing to do so peoples thoughts and comments are welcome

    Wet Mode - Not that I intend to take it out in the wet.
    ABS = 3 - Should cut in very quickly and stop the front slipping out under me
    DTC = 6 - Should prevent any rear wheel slippage
    EBC = 1 - combined with ABS should also prevent rear wheel lock ups.

    Sport Mode
    ABS = 2 - Can break harder before it cuts in
    DTC = 3 - More wheel spin before traction control intervenes
    EBC = 2 - Engine breaking is eased off a bit

    Race Mode - Hell Yeah, Mental mode turn it all off
    ABS = 1 or off
    DTC = 1 or off
    EBC = 1 or off

    Now the funny thing is they don't recommend turning it all off as it is there for your safety, so what the hell were we riding before ? Death Traps?
    Before all these gadgets we knew our limits, traction control was governed by the fistful of throttle your right hand was grabbing, you used the breaks according to weather and road conditions.
    Are they taking the skill and judgement away from the rider?

  2. moved to 899 :smile:

  3. Sorry!! I just searched and it comes up and says I need to refine can you give me the link?

    Its ok I just sussed it out, what a div :)

  4. Hello everyone! Hope you are all having a nice holiday time :)

    I find that when in WET mode if I set EBC to 2 or 3 that I get a much smoother town ride, I personally find the engine brake in WET mode 1 a little bit too aggressive.

    I have made a video tutorial here:

  5. What do you mean by to aggresive, does it make the arse end skip about? The book and the standard setting is 3 but am thinking of changing it to 1 the more engine breaking the less actual breaking you need.

  6. too aggressive engine braking I meant by that. When you take off the throttle I find the engine braking too harsh as it's slowing me down too much so I need to rev harder when I want to get going again. My bike came in WET mode with EBC setting at 1 (a lot of engine brake) so I changed it to 3 which I happen to find a much smoother roll out once you let go of the throttle.

  7. I think all owners will have to test each setting out as everyone will have their own preference, I did my running in in damp to wet conditions had it set to sport mode and ABS was on 1, I didn't find it a problem but bear in mind I have an 848 streetfighter at home and I have just traded in my 848 Evo, neither have the option to adjust engine breaking so its always full on.
    Not sure why you need to rev harder either, I have been in 4th trickling through traffic at 25 squeeze the throttle and it pulls fine, oh your in wet mode the engine power is set to low (90bhp only) no wonder you are finding it sluggish.
    Well I dont intend to use wet mode, as far as I am concerned if you dont want it slipping in the wet be gentle with the throttle.
    Jap bikes are not as aggressive in the engine breaking department so if that is what your used to then a proper V-Twin is a whole new ball game.

  8. Very much so!

    I had given in my CBR for servicing and was given a Suzuki SV650S for a replacement bike, the SV650 is a V-Twin as well, it's really on that bike that I had started to appreciate the low end torque and pull of such an engine, from then onward I really didn't like my inline 4 any longer - then the amazing 899 came along, it was very much a done deal in my mind especially after seeing her at the NEC in Birmingham! The fantastic thing about the 899 is that she has so much power low down, and whats even better is the fact that it's usable power nicely spread over the entire rpm curve - beautiful! love it! :)

  9. My first Ducati was a 750ss not a mean machine by a long way but I was impressed with the v twin torque, now bear in mind its not a sports bike and is probably along the same lines of an SV650 I was very dissapointed when I rode the SV I had one for a week as a courtesy bike.
    since then I have had 2 x 749's an 848, 848 Evo which I have traded in for the 899 and I have an 848 streetfighter so I am well versed in the Duc's capabilities I luv em so much fun to ride.
    The 848 and the Evo were very snatchy on the throttle but the 899 has been smoothed out so much I was so impressed when I rode the demo.
    I have clocked up 600 miles on it to get the first service done had the termi end cans fitted an she is now garaged and waiting for the weather to improve. Its going to be a long bloody winter I am itching to get out.

  10. Nice video but do you need the engine running?

  11. Nope! :) Just thought may as well rather than mixing some nasty music background why not have the Panigale keeping the video entertained! lol (not sure though if the neighbors appreciated that very much! Never mind it's X-mas only once a year :biggrin:)

  12. EBC1 is for racers who want to square the rear ( let it step out) before corner entry... it's not somehing i would do in the wet. especially as the ABS 3 mode will do anything in its power to avoid exatly that... :)

    more power, more grip, lighter bikes , more manouvrability, higher speeds.... that wrist that still has to control it all needs a much more talented brain.... and for those who don't have such a brain - ie : almost all of us - that's when the electronics come in handy.. :)

  13. Yes but we have been riding bikes for years without electronic gadgets and for those of us that have made it this far we must have been doing something right :)

  14. yep , not ride them as fast as we could have... :)
