900 / 1000 Advice

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by conkers, Nov 4, 2013.

  1. Hello all - newbie with questions. Have the opportunity to buy either a 900ss or 1000ss. Both bikes are "senna" colours with both also having approx. 20 - 25k miles. The 900 (2002) is a private sale and a little cheaper than the 1000 which is from a dealer. The 1000(2003) has a short warranty and has "fruity"exhausts (Termis or DP - can't remember which) with the original pipes and a Bagster tank cover as extras. The 900 has an ohlins rear shock and an aluminium swing-arm (probably from a 1000ss!!). I haven't visited either bike in person as yet but from pictures ( I know - dangerous! ) they seem pretty clean and straight. I thought I could forearm myself with some words of wisdom from this forum before I delve any deeper.
Any advice / comments / help would be great from you guys.
    Cheers.
    John.

  2. What prices are they at?

  3. Around 3 ,500. What do you think? I don't know too much about the ss models. Any particular quirks etc. that I should be aware of?
    Cheers.

  4. That's a high price for a 900 with 25k on the clock , I don't know much about the 1000 (hopefully someone will reply with a bit of knowledge) but I've seen a couple of magazine reviews in the past that reckon the 1000 is the better bike. Don't know if that helps much.

  5. I'm considering offers in the region of £2200 for my 1000 with 13k on the clock.

  6. If its the 1000ds engine. I would go for that one. The 1000 had the bigger swingarm and Ohlins shock. I use to own a 900ss ie 02 great bike. totally reliable 2 valve motor. loads of torque. And all those 900ss and 1000's are a good price.

  7. Cheers skidoff for the reply. This is the type of info I need in order to get a feel for the bikes.
    Cheers - John.

  8. Thanks for the info Mafred. However, I think I would prefer a "standard colour" bike . BUT never say NEVER !!

  9. Colour never interested me, I can always paint it black :)

  10. I'd personally go for the 1000DS as it's a far better engine, better head design and even with end cans and ecu re-map your not far of 90Bhp and torque to match.

  11. You're not for off 90 as standard.
I would have thought that a remap would take it over 100.

  12. Ducati horsepower! Anyone with 1000SS dyno sheet? Below is from MCN (Take it as you find it I guess, but they don't make as much as you think)

    Ducati 1000SS - Dyno Testing

A standard carb SS is only 73Bhp -56lb of torque. 900 I.E is about 75-78, 1000DS 82-86Bhp I reckon 65lb of torque (Up to the 90+mark with end cans and map, 70lb of torque) Bit more fettling and over 100Bhp is well within reach, higher outputs are also achievable with big bore kits and £££$$$$£££
I had a 944cc carb engine (Gas flowed, blue printed, light weight flywheel) FCRs and fully race system loads of ££ thrown at it made 90Bhp n 70lb of torque.

  13. The little research I've done on that subject pretty much agrees for standard and remap/endcans.
But the '03 multistrada is listed at over 100.
    Isn't that the same engine?

By the way, anyone know how viper cans compare with standard?

  14. Listed and actual are 2 different things I'm afraid. As for end cans they are pretty much the same power wise (3-5Bhp, it's the noise that counts :upyeah:

  15. Noise is a downside.
The enemy gets warning if they can hear you coming :)

Mainly thinking that if the multistada has that much more power then wouldn't using it's map be the best starting point?

I'd be quite happy with top speed of a ton if the upside was 60mpg.

  16. Conkers. Check out item no. 281202032521 on ebay. (sorry don't know how to post a link). 1000ss looks like a great bike at great price!!.

  17. The last(2002 built) 900SS had upgrade chunky swingarm and ohlins rear shock same as 1000SS, maybe 5 spoke wheels.
