900 Head Nuts And Washers

  1. Morning all

I’ve brought a set of APE Cylinder/Head studs for the Bitsa/Mongrel 900SS/Monster engine we’re building which has a Monster 900 bottom end, 962 Pots, matching Mahle Pistons, and 900SS heads.

The shopping list for the engine is still huge, but mainly small bits and pieces like O rings etc, so I’ve been running through the Stein-Dinse website looking up part numbers.

The S-D website is very good, but has showed up the options/replacements on the Nuts and washers for the Cylinder studs.

It looks like the latest option is 12 point flanged nuts and plain washers which is great, but I was wondering if there was a recognised better option like the APE studs.

It might seem very minor, and probably won’t make any difference, but knowing the standard studs have a tendency to snap I thought I’d ask.

I’m not new to engine building by any means, just Ducati, so don’t have the years of specific knowledge you guys have.

    Thanks

  2. The stock washers are D profile that lock out against the head. Stock nuts are 15mm hex. The later bi-hex nuts are 14mm and sit on conventional round washers. There's nothing in it really other than improved access to get the tool in.
I'd stick with whatever should be in there tbh.

  3. Thanks Nelly.

Unfortunately I don’t know what is supposed to be there really.

The S-D website shows D washers and Flanged Hex nuts for Monsters, then loads of options for the 900SS including D or Plain washers and hex or 12 point flanged nuts.

  4. I know it's a "mongrel" you're building, but what year are the heads? I'll find out for you

  5. Old carb' heads then... I'd definitely stick with the D washer and original nuts. There's no benefit from going down the bi-hex route. Lube the threads and underside of the nuts.
