900sl Rear Wheel Issue

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by 749si, May 3, 2015.

  1. Changed the rear sprocket Saturday, wheel out no probs, new sprocket on the carrier no probs, go to re fit the wheel and big probs !!
When I removed the wheel all the spacers dropped off, I know which side is which, obvious,
But when I put them back in, in what appears to be the correct order etc, it is too long and won't fit between swing arm to the point where I was having to spread the swinger to get the wheel any where near fitting and when I did get it in and tighten it up the wheel locks solid.
The sprocket side has a thick domed washer/ spacer which fits over the circlip and bearing and a long thick spacer which goes through this and into the carrier, should the domed washer have the domed part facing in or out, fits both ways.
On the brake side there are two spacers which fit in the caliper plate a larger one and a smaller one, initialy I had the larger on the inside of the bracket as I thought the wideness was to cover the bearing, this is wrong and I changed them over and it's still the same.
Sorry no photos IPad won't upload them.
Any ideas ? It really is driving me mad.
    Thanks
    Si

  2. Turn the domed spacer the other way....so the 'point' is inwards.

  3. Thanks Al :upyeah::Banghead:

  4. BTW..........the big top hat type bush goes in from the back of the sprocket carrier.

  5. Oh right ok Al, I did try that but the carrier didn't sit flush on the wheel ?

  6. Looking at the bike from the rear, what you should have is the left leg of the swingarm.
Inside that, tight against the swingarm is the large domed washer with the dome or point facing inwards.
The domed washer fits over the end of the big top hat bush which is poking through the outside of the carrier when inserted from the back of the carrier.
The point of the domed washer should be tight against the inner race of the outer carrier bearing.
The 'point' of the top hat bush at the back of the carrier should be tight against the inner race of the left hand wheel bearing.

Your SL arrangement is different to my 750 on the brake side, but looking at the parts manual, you should have what looks like another top hat bush which is shorter than the carrier side and I assume it is domed......the dome should be against the inner race of the right side wheel bearing.

The small end of that bush should be inside the brake caliper 'carrier' (which has a small bush inside it) and on the ride side of the brake carrier there is another smaller bush with a flange around it........the longer side of the bush should sit in the 'carrier' bush, where it is tight against the end of the top hat bush (the joint is inside the 'carrier').

I assume the short side of the outer bush fits against the inside of the right leg of the swingarm.

  7. Thanks so much Al you're a star, such a stupid mistake to make not taking notice of where bits go, my own bloody stupid fault !!!

  8. Apologies if I'm wrong on the brake side........I haven't taken an SL wheel out with the underslung caliper 'carrier'..........I just looked at the parts manual, knowing that the 'carrier' has to be able to 'rotate' hence the bushing in the carrier and the smaller of the 'split' pair of bushes that obviously cannot be fitted the other way around otherwise it would jam the 'carrier' and I think, make the wheel / axle assembly too long to fit in the swingarm.

  9. @Arquebus...thanks for your help Al, all back together and sorted, feel like such a Tit !!!!

  10. Am about to fit my rear wheel into the swing arm of my 900SL that's being rebuilt, anybody with a picture of the back end, particularly the caliper hanger side. Not 100% sure of the 2 bushes that fit into the hanger:confused: Found the following 900SL Ducati IPC, based on that, that's how it should go.:D

  11. Looks to me as though you have got them the right way around.......

  12. I have however seen pics on the internet with the larger bushing facing the swing arm, now Im totally confused:Arghh::Arghh::Arghh:

  13. Any 900SL experts out there that can confirm please, much appreciated!
    Thanks!

  14. Perhaps stick the wheel in with the hanger and the bushes one way around, then try them the other way.............that way you can test if the caliper lines up properly or doesn't as the case may be.....

But as far as I can see the OD of the larger bush is the same as the domed washer on the sprocket side, so applying a bit of logic, the big bush should be on the inside.

...........Notwithstanding the fact that if the larger bush goes against the swingarm, the hanger won't float (rotate) because the whole assembly will be jammed when you tighten the axle.

  15. As always, thanks for the valuable assistance.

The Ducati IPC drawing is incorrect:Arghh::Arghh::Arghh:

The 2 pics below illustrate the correct order.

    Thanks
