Got a W2 headed engine in my old 96 900SS (from a monster, didn't know when I bought it) and wondering if a 2002 injected motor would fit in? Frame mounts, swinging arm, inlet manifolds and exhaust etc. Thanks.
Motor will go straight in but fitting all the gubbins might be a pain and you will need to fit hp fuel pump. Are you good with electricery. Probably easiest to fit complete ie loom
I put a Monster engine in my IE and had to fabricate a timing gear. With injection to injection I thought it would be easy but temp sensors became an issue within the ecu. Are you proposing to run carburettors?
Thanks. I didn't say but I intend to run it with carbs, eventually FCRs. That's a good start if the engine will drop straight in and I can use my existing swinging arm. Ignition stuff could be different right enough.
Look into it before you start spending. I think the way the spark is generated and triggered are via ecu on ie motor. @Lucazade built half breed motor for a monster a while back.
Having fitted an injected engine to a Monster frame the only concern I had was the injectors were too high up and clashed with the frame: I had to cut the frame to allow the I take to fit: I then over braced the frame just so it looked good: Yorkie
as previous replies yes it will all fit, and the ie airbox is different but not difficult to fit, but if I may why use an ie lump then fit carbs, is there a problem with the monster lump? According to the build data history by Ian Falloon, from 1993 the 900 monster shared it's engine with 900ss till 1997 (from engine number 014364: Note larger cylinder head studs, & no tacho drive) when the monster was given smaller valves from engine number 037728.
Thanks. I bought the SS knowing it had a Monster engine, but didn't know it had the small valve heads. Only engines around for sale are the SS ie ones just now. I must admit I don't find it lacking in power with the small valve engine.
I fitted a 620SSie engine into a 600SS frame and it fits straight in without modification... The only issue is the engine bolts. At the rear the SS is 8mm whereas the SSie is 10mm. This is sorted by using a piece of 10mm tubing, 1mm thick, so sleeve the 8mm bolt. Slide it into the SSie engine and then cut flush. You can then use the 8mm bolt. For the front, the SS uses two bolts that screw into the engine, 8mm iirc, but the SSie uses another 10mm long bolt. For this we drilled out the 8mm holes in the frame to 10mm to use the original SSie bolt. As for the engine, the FI system is way better if you can stick with it. I swapped out the carby fuel pump in the original tank to an FI pump (3bar pump from a Triumph as they're the same as Ducati but cheaper!) and everything else stays the same. But if you MUST go back to carbs then the fun will begin with intakes and so on. Personally I would rather get an intake extended by an inch than have to cut sections of frame!
Yes, she did me proud until I got taken out by a novice rider! It did get rebuilt but in a slightly different style...
There's a relevant thread on the .ms forum - two options - both use an Ignitech unit, triggered either by a sensor reading the timing gear teeth, or by sensors activated by a rotor fitted to the timing belt pulley. Sent from my P01M using Tapatalk
Thanks for all the info. I think I'll try and get hold of some V2 heads or a complete big valve Carby engine or get the W heads fitted with bigger valves or even just stay with what I've got.
