900ss Assembly - Crank Preload & Shimming

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by gaz92, Apr 22, 2022.

  1. I am just shimming at the moment.

    What's your thoughts:

Selector Drum - 0.8 end float - may be a bit tight but happy with this.
Clutch Input - A bit tight at moment 0.02/0.03 I think I need to lap a shim down I don't want to add 0.1 which is all I have and assemble at 0.12/0.15
Drive Output - 0.05 end float OK
Crank Preload - I measured and shimmed for 0.15. The feel was a definite drag and the crank would not drop under it's own weight. I would say the drag was medium, it was not light and was not lumpy, but did have a bit of stick slip when rotating it.
I then removed 0.1. The feel was it dropped from about 2 o'clock position under it's own weight.

So theoretically it was at 0.05 but who knows.

Do you think the "feel" description ties up with the preload values.

  2. That's not an easy one to answer, the crank should have some drag, as it'll loosen up when hot. I would trust feel over exact figures imo.

  3. Brad Black (I think) has done an article on crank preload. I usually follow his suggestions and have had no problems.

  4. Thanks for replies chaps.
Been finishing off today. Lapped a couple of thick shims down as I thought 0.1 was too much of a jump.
    Selector Drum 0.9 end float
    Clutch input 0.05 end float
    Drive output 0.05 end float
Crank. When measuring and putting the casings together I did not fully torque bolts. I did not what to keep hammering the threads and from work experience I thought the gasket would not be that compressible. After finally torqueing the bolt the feel is - dropping under it's own weight from about 3 o'clock position (only a bit further round than before meaning it's tightened slightly) and would describe the drag as light. I felt adding 0.1 back in as I had originally was a bit too much and I prefer this feel so I'm going with this.

  5. By the way Iam not saying this is the correct preload. I am just showing what I've done and the decision I have come to. I wanted to post so others get a feel for it and in the hope others could either agree or disagree.
I did a quick video see to how it finally looked. Black mark and drilling are centre of weights.
Just had error uploading file so will redo and post in next reply.

    Cheers Gaz

  6. Had problem uploading file so did the YouTube thing. I know there is probably a bit of drag with the con rods resting on casing. Hope I have done the YouTube thing right.
