900SS Gear Change Bush!

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by GDS968, Oct 9, 2013.

  1. Any one know where I can get hold of a new bush for the gear change peddle on my 92 900SS. Have been told that these are no longer available.

    cheers

  2. You are correct............so you have the choice of trying to find one from a bearing stockist or making one..............I took the easiest option...........

    ...........and made two.............

.........they are only flat strip of phospher bronze or similar (actualy, mine are Teflon lined) which you wrap around a socket of appropriate diameter.........

  3. Cheers AL. I thought that might be the case...bugger. Will have to see what I can fabricate then. Don't suppose you have enough phospher bronze to make some more??

  4. Ah......mine wasn't phosphor bronze but Teflon coated summink or other...........it was a fork slider bush originally........

I'll see if I have some left.

  5. cheers, much appreciated!!

  6. I don't have a suitable piece other than a whole one which I would prefer to hang onto for dimensions in case I have to order new ones.............and the Teflon is missing from a third of the width so it would be a sloppy bush on the shaft.

............so, I'm trying to think if I have anything else that will do it.........

.............copper pipe is too soft, even if tempered correctly.........stainless steel might be OK but you would need to grease it often.

    However, check these out......

But if you get really stuck, I will measure my fork bush for my records and then knock one up.

  8. I have got an old bush out and a spare pedal, so I will run some check measurements as well.

  9. 21mm long x 18mm OD x 14.2mm ID (probably a worn 14mm)..........

Interesting that I had bronze type bushes in one set of pedals and Nylon/plastic bushes in the spare set.

Still, one of these would probably do the trick and if it was mine I would use a thin hacksaw and run a cut along the length....

In the meantime, I will have another look to see what I have that might do for the job......I think I may have something the right size in brass.

  11. I have gone through nearly every box and cannot find a suitable bush in either plastic or soft-ish metal.....(apart from some aluminium which I suppose would be a temporary replacement, but as it is only 1mm thick, it would have to be a double bush with one inside the other)...........

.........I have found another steel fork bush with what looks like a bronze plated outer face and Teflon inside; plus it is 2mm thick...............but to bend that nicely around a 13mm - 14mm socket; it isn't going to be easy.......I will try it tomorrow and see what sort of effort is required.

I have checked on the pedal spindle diameter which is 14mm.........so that ties up with the ID of the actual pedal bush.

  12. Al I have ordered a couple of those bronze bushes from simply bearings to give them a go as well. Many thanks for your help and input.
