900ss ie buzzing bars - possible solution...

  1. If you've read my other thread you'll know that I have fitted a new set of clip ons and bars on my Duc and acquired a problem with buzzy bars.

Having a think about it for a few days and trawling the web I've come up with a solution that may or may not work and I'm detailing it below for future reference:

    bar_weights-1.jpg
First stop was BN&Q to get hold of some silicone tubing of the right external diameter to make a tight fit in the bar's internal bore - I then cut two 16cm Lengths. I used cable ties to keep a roundish shape to the tube whilst the silicone cured as it had obtained a flattish elliptical profile from the storage reel in the store.

Next I plugged up the ends with some clear silicone - (more like opaque if you ask me)

In the mean time I acquired some lead shot - as I shoot clays - 6 shotgun cartridges became the donors for this! ;)

    With the silicone now set

I filled the tube with the lead......

  2. bar_weights-6.jpg
this is the weight of one

    bar_weights-7.jpg
    and then of the other

I made adjustments to make each tube approximately 109 grams in weight - i wanted to keep them more or less equal in weight as was possible.

    bar_weights-8.jpg
then as before I sealed up the tubes with silicone again and will leave them to dry overnight.

    bar_weights-10.jpg

The "theory" is that the silicone itself will have some vibration damping qualities and then the extra weight will shift the bar resonance to a different rev range - I'll fit them within the next 48 hours and go for a test ride and report back on either total or partial success or abject failure! stay tuned :)

  4. a mass damper which also doubles as a thief stick - like it :upyeah:

  5. OK - fitted them in the bars today...

    bars_b_1.jpg
The bar end plugs that come as standard are a pretty tight fit - no method I tried to get them out intact was working so it took a set of pipe grips and brute force to convince them to come out - luckily they're not needed anymore..

    bars_b_3.jpg
The internal dimensions are 15 mm recess of 17mm diameter and then the rest of the bar's bore is a smidge under 15mm

    bars_b_4.jpg
The "weights" are greased up for insertion! I used corrosion block grease FYI (kenneth williams style sniggers abound)

    bars_b_5.jpg
and teased into position with a suitable bar of the right diameter - in this case a socket extension.

    bars_b_6.jpg
and here they are in place ready for final adjustments soon. - I'm still waiting for the oberon bar ends to arrive - I've gone with the small 21.5 mm diameter anodised ones they manufature as the collet system they use will work fine with the weird dimensions of this bar. More soon....

  9. I bet the OP makes coshes for people like the Krays.........

I would be inclined or (leaning over) to balance the induction.....

  10. have buzzy bars on my ie get numb hands even after a short ride
have fitted bar end weights not as bad but still there
had front wheel bearings changed which where up for being main culprit
    but still just there
mainly worst when just cruising with low revs disappears with higher revs
so just figured its just me driving like a granny
and used to jap inline fours
had throttle bodys balanced still vibrated
    easy fix ride faster ;)
