900ss Ie Refurb - Finishing The Job

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by NHM, Dec 28, 2015.

  1. Hi all,

I'm just nearing the end of a rebuild of my '02 900SS ie (Senna colour scheme) and I have some questions (didn't take the right pictures when I took it apart)...

Just to summarise the work... I stripped it all down, had the heads refurbished (Thanks Rich at Luigi Moto) and some powder coating (Thanks Steve at TPCS): Wheels (red); frame (grey metallic); swinging arm (silver, because it had a gouge out of it). Work I did myself: replaced clutch, steering head bearings, loads of the usual o rings etc, and I've put it all (mostly) back together. Oh yes. I painted the engine (silver Hammerite Smooth for the main engine, but black for the barrels), and I checked inside the fuel tank for rust - which luckily isn't present. At last it's looking like a bike again.

However, I didn't take pictures of the location of the various shaped wire cable/ tube guides. If there's anyone out there who can tell me the right routing for:

    1. The fuel tank breather tube. (has a wire guide, but I can't find anything that gives me a clue where it's supposed to be fitted.
    2. The guide for the radiator return oil pipe. I think it attaches to the starter mount screw, but is that right?
    3. There are three other twisty wire things that I think I've located... but if anyone has time to take a picture or two and post them, I'd be very, very grateful!

Now a couple of more general questions...

    4. The switchgear is all in pretty good nick, but the red plastic has faded to pink and I don't like it. Is there any way of somehow re-colouring it?
    5. The seat cover looks very tired - is it possible to have it re-covered? Who'd be good to do this?
    6. The tank pad is beginning to break down (pinholes in the surface finish). Is it possible to refurb this, or do I need to get to get a new one. It looks like they're the thick part of £50, so obviously I'd rather not!

Lastly, is there anything I should think of before I get this back on the road again?

I do have some pictures, but I didn't figure that people would want to see yet another 'standard' rebuild... Can upload some if people want to see them, but they're not that interesting.

    Thanks for listening!

    Nick

  5. Brake fluid revitalises faded plastics for a few months

  6. +1 to pics!
How about a red bumper restore or a wax for the switches? I've had some success with plastic parts using this method

  7. Red plastic............??

Ugh..........change it for black unless imperative it has to be red......

  8. I think he is referring to a couple of red switches that fade to pink

  9. If you can/want to dismantle the switches to separate the red items, Rit Dye is supposed to work quite well on plastics.

  10. Some photos here of the spring type cable way holders and a copy of the relevant page from parts schedule. Items 21 & 25.
Regards the faded switch gear red buttons. This took me ages to find a decent 2nd hand starter assembly but finally did on ebay. It was from USA so took a risk but it arrived and just like new. I have since bought other bits from this supplier.
Had my seat recovered by a guy in Rotherham who runs a cobblers shop. £28 and did a really good job.
Definitely want to see pictures of your finished bike. Finished mine October 2015.

  11. My cable guides are stainless steel.......

........I got fed up with the rusty ones spoiling the clean look, so I made them.....simple enough........

.....use the very top part of old car aerials.

  15. Cool, nice idea!

  16. A lot of it is generic you could always modify the plugs using your old one if it was different.

  17. would stainless welding rods work aswell as I have a few of those lying around

  18. I can confirm a 748 / 916 / ST2 starter button and kill switch fits.

  19. Yes - thats what I use

  20. Aww - thanks so much! The tear-down was dead easy, but finishing the rebuild has been a bit of a puzzle. Thanks ducatijones especially for the pictures!

I'm away from home until 1 Jan - will post some pictures as soon as I get home.

Even naked (no fairing) the bike looks so much better than it did... but now some of the bits I didn't do are looking a bit tired. I can see that this show could run and run...

Thanks again, everyone - much appreciated!
