900SS Inner Clutch

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by GDS968, Dec 7, 2012.

  1. Can anyone advise what the acceptable amount of visable wear is on the inner clutch assembly, replacing my plates and basket at the moment and noticed some groving on the inner carrier etc. Any advice welcome. Ta.

  2. that's a really good question and it's hard to measure also. It partly comes down to how your 'clutch action' at the lever feels although this is obviously attributable to many other things like how deep similar grooves in basket are, how grimy, worn and/or distorted your plates are. I'm sure a dealer would replace earlier than I would - if the wear is so bad that the worst area is stepped visibly or really rough to the nail (al unghia!) then replacement will definitely aid clutch-action quality. It's a real 'how long is a piece of string' subject sorry, see if others can word it better.

  3. Thanks for the reply Chris, will have another feel and see what I think!!

  4. Depends how bad it is - one mans scrap is anothers useful spare.

    Any pictures?

  5. As above, it's all down to how freely the plates can move along the surface of the hub, and also what it feels like, so it's hard to give an exact amount because each person has their own preference.

Something like this is visibly worn, but may well still operate with causing the plates to stick/jump across the wear grooves:

But as a rule of thumb I'd say that any more than that and you'd want to look to replace it.

  6. I had exactly the same problem with mine, it was found when doing a service and clutch replacement. An engineering mate of mine with years of experience of rebuilding classic British and Italian bikes sorted it for me. He machined it for me taking the high spots out. He's done it a couple of times before for other people but he says its a one time only fix, you can't do it again.

  7. What cmotandy said is what I done to SS basket. There is plenty material to flush it the least one time. I used metal file.

  8. Thanks guys for all the replies, mine is not as bad as antonye's image shows, may try cleaning up and giving it a go for a bit longer!!
